Woah, that girl appears like in the RTH rock n' roll fantasy league graphic. Marc Bolan and Roger Daltrey's hair always struck me as being very similar in style. Slash seems to have taken them up on that game as well. Same shampoo?

Jonathan Lethem, RTH lurker:

"Matthew stood at the room's center, leaning on his microphone stand with his back to the drums, acoustic guitar strapped across his shoulder but dangling untouched. Matthew knew only rudimentary chords, his strumming inessential to the band's sound."

All-star Jam change of topic: I just watched "Unforgiven" for the first time -- a damn near perfect flick. ***** (Hrrundi's highest rating)

So the book is good? Or do you really have Jonathan Lethem over and he's posting through your account? :) The perfect quote for that video.

The book is...okay. Flawed and slight, but entertaining. It's no THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, which I thought was terrific.

The Unforgiven was great, and it falls into that category of Movies I'm Not Really Sure I Like Until the last 30 Minutes. Miller's Crossing is the all-time leader in this department, for me.

I went in expecting to like it, but I didn't get it. The central moral dilemma seemed to be 'does killing make you a man?' and that seemed totally irrelevant to my life.

Wait, was this in reference to Unforgiven or Miller's Crossing? I'd have to say, that's not really my modus operandi either;) Too funny BigSteve!:)

I've never seen Miller's Crossing. I meant Unforgiven. I am willing to consider the possibility that killing makes you a woman.

Comments on Bolan's stance? The ankle to ankle march followed by a 2.5-3 foot stride? Did Bolan perhaps introduce the ankle to ankle stance that is solely responsible of Mr. Moderator's dislike of REM? Or was George Harrison the first ankle to ankler?

I'd like to ask for a show of hands on the coolness of the Lennon "crotch bounce." Is that cool, or just weird looking? Womyn of RTH, I especially look to you for your feelings on this topic!

Lennon's wide stance and centering of his artistic forces on the crotch area is not only very cool; it adds to his game.

Sammy raises a good question about Bolan's stance. We may have to dig back and see where that other end of the stage presence spectrum began. We'll need to check the stances of Carl Perkins, the guy who played with Ricky Nelson - James Burton, and the other founding fathers of rock guitar.

THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE is fantastic. I've been meaning to ask/tell people about that book on here for a long time.

Carl Perkins, even after his hair club for men era, used to do this little skipping dance while he played a lead that was very cool. He was a cool cat, and that helps.

I think you have to keep in mind that everybody's personal geography is different, and a move or stance that works for one person won't work for another. I think one problem is when someone consciously or un mimics someone without compensating for the differences. If Ray Benson did the Marc Bolan prance it wouldn't work. Fortunately he doesn't.

Oh, and regarding the Bolan stance - you have to remember how strictly made-for-TV appearances are staged. I'm sure he was told some variation of "Don't go too far left - you'll be out of the picture! Don't go too far right - you'll obscure the bass layer and the girl graphic! Now go out there and have fun! Show some energy!"

By the way, watching that video again, it's important to note that Bolan's prance comes out of a strong, shoulder-width stance. The REM guys the other night never got into a proper shoulder-width stance. Prances, leaps, what-have-you may follow provided the guitarist starts and ends in a balanced, straight-ahead position that both confronts and invites the audience.

I can dig the Bolan "crotch bounce" but Lennon's - isn't his more of a shimmy/guitar as an extension of himself kind of move? I'm thinking cold turkey live, but should I be thinking something else?
