Calling Mockcarr... We know you want Harrison.

HA. Mr. Mod thinks he knows what I want. Well, after reading how recording engineer Geoff Emerick lambasted Harrison's work in the mid 60s, and his outrageous demands for "jam butties" and several sports cars, tax-free of course, he's priced himself out of my band. I hear he's happier being a movie producer anyway. So after considering many hotshots like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton (not the best player, but a real mensch I'm told), hell, even that whiny Alex Chilton, I felt the guitarist should be someone who respects the John & Paul's compositions more than his own reputation and prowess. One with the proper rock connections but without his own overwhelming fame or need to vie for the spotlight. One who's able to portray the proper rock allusions and influences but sneak a little rock power as well as a "tasty lick" or riff into the song when appropriate. Finally, I really need to choose someone from this side of the pond not in immediate danger of senility, and who's fully paid his dues in the proper unions. I don't want to repeat the Kinks' mistakes.

I pick Mike Campbell.

Mike Campbell is it! Great choice.

Well, I'm totally clueless on what my rights and obligations are with regard to free agency and such, but I need to go "offlist" one last time to pick my keyboard player. I need an all-rounder, but someone with real soul "chops" to keep the All-American vibe flowin' long and flowin' strong. Someone who lived through the decade that really worked best for the young, hungry Seeg -- but someone who really wasn't *of* the decade. Someone who works well with "talent," and excels at playing the role of eminence grise. Most importantly, I need someone who can provide some counterweight to the whole Jack White/Keef thing. In order to get my alt/roots/soul/classic rock centrifuge whirling with just the right balance, Bob Seger and the New Dynamic Superiors select:

Alan Toussaint.

Thank you.

Thanks you, Townsman Hrrundi. For the Developmental Rounds, you will have $75,000 with which to play.

Geo is on the clock.

Hey, Commish. I got a problem -- there are no horn sections, string sections or robed choirs in the developmental pool to make the powerhouse combo I'm obligated to assemble. One Clarence Clemons does not a horn section make! What muss I do?

Good question, Hrrundi. Let's circle back to it before the Developmental stage begins. I've got a few thoughts. Perhaps you do too. Thanks.

The Memphis Horns and the Rumour Horns are in the main talent pool. I can't think of too many other self-contained horn sections. Only The Tower of Power Horns and The Mike Cotton Sound come to mind. Same with strings. The Nashville String Machine?

I don't fully understand the mechanics of the selection process or how the developmental pool works. Does it make sense to have anyone who wasn't picked in the main rounds available as if they were developmental? How about a Remainders Talent Pool, like a cutouts sale?

There are also:

The Horny Horns
The JBs Horn Section
The EW&F Horns (forget what they're called)
The Kinks Horn Section from their mostly lousy 70s days (sorry, Oats)

The remainder idea you propose, BigSteve, is what I have in mind, too. First, though, I'm trying to figure out a way to punish GMs for not having selected those musicians when they could have had them for top dollar. The punitive element is key to a Strong Commissioner.
03/26/07 @ 11:46
Comment from: hrrundivbakshi [Member] Email
How about: you pick an artist from column "A" during the remainder sale, and the Commish gets to arbitrarily select a similar artist from the same list? So I say: "I want the horn section from the JBs, and since they're remainders, I only pay $5,000!" -- to which you say, "That's fine, Bob Seger and The New Dynamic Superiors, but the JBs horns have gone into the studio with Terence Trent D'Arby. The guys we've got left that are closest to what you're looking for are the Tower Of Power Horns. You want 'em?"

Not a bad idea, Hrrundi, but does it make the punitive nature of the round too arbitrary? I'd like for it to be a fair as it is cruel.

I'm signing a free agent this round too, rescuing him from Neil Diamond's touring band, the only man to drum for both Elvises and for The Jerry Garcia Band -- Ron Tutt.

And better yet...BigSteve and Sally C turned in their final picks in advance, so Scottrodgers is on the clock!

Very interesting - and exciting - as we head into the homestretch!

I'm going the free agent route again. The band is a bit concerned about the vocals situation, and I need a bass player who can mesh with everyone.

So, I'll take Rick Danko. He hasn't done much lately, but I think he'll be up to the task.

We're still working out the band name. It's down to a couple picks...

Great free-agent signing, Scott.

Andyr's final 2 picks are on the clock. Watch your cap space, my friend. Let us know if you'd like to deal one of those final picks. I've got "future considerations" to offer.

Hope all is well with Townsman Andyr. Once his picks are in, give me a day to reload for the Developmental Draft. Also, I'm going to be spending at least part of the coming day in jury duty. Enjoy this new day in the Halls of Rock, and surprise me with new, sparkling ideas!

I'm alive, Mr Mod, Just the pesky job again. I'll trade one of my picks for future considerations. Maybe you can throw in a bucket of balls.

With my last pick, I am going to punch up my concept for Ray Cooper's Cabo Wabo Party Band with a funkier edge by siging free agent guitarist Brian Emch "B" from Columbus Ohio's Royal Crescent Mob

Hey, sorry I've been out of the loop. CRAZY day! With my final pick, as reacquired from Andyr, I'm going to take a risk. I'd been planning on finding a way to bring Martin Belmont into the band for some stability and live punch, but I can't pass up the chance to fill up 96 tracks of guitar overdubs between Mick Jones and our new, lead guitarist and co-conceptualist in the bold sound of Afterschool Special, Mr. Jimmy Page!

This concludes the 5th and final round of the Talent Pool Draft. Stay tuned for a review of band rosters as we head into the Developmental Draft sometime tomorrow afternoon. Thanks!
