A SINCERE QUESTION

I have just one question: why?

So who will show up? Fernando from "Saturday Night Live?" Harry from "When Harry Meet Sally?" Mitch from "City Slickers?"

We'll see when the long and versatile career of Billy Crystal will be saluted Oct. 11 by the Kennedy Center. The center announced today that he is the winner of the annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Billy Crystal the comedian can appear but not Billy Crystal the Actor. And not on a big screen...EVER. Ugh!

I'm with Mr. Mod. To what extent do a few moments, even a few years, of genius excuse a lifetime of crap?

I think this is a worthwhile question to ask of musicians too. Which deserve a pass on their garbage because of their moments of greatness? And for which does the garbage overwhelm the greatness?

I give Rod Stewart a pass for his handful of kick-ass singles in the first half of the '70s and his work with Faces. Rock 'n Roll artists must be appreciated for their great work. It's an ephemeral art form and market.

I'd give a pass to Rod Stewart too, but his list of Rock Crimes continues to grow.

Jonathan Richman also gets a pass from me, mainly because, unlike Stewart, I don't have to hear his less good stuff everywhere.

But, you know, the Cure, for instance? I like that first record. But is it enough to excuse everything that came after?

I've got a beef with Richman for so quickly turning away from the sound of the original Modern Lovers and committing himself to that creepy state of faux innocence. At least Rod Stewart just got sauced and quickly declined to the point of sucking horribly.

So you're saying, then, that for you, Richman does not get a pass on his garbage because of moments of early greatness?

Yes, I'm saying that because Richman brazenly abandoned the cause of great rock 'n roll, he deserves my scorn. Same goes for Joe Jackson. Don't use the Power and Glory of Rock and those of us who believe to get your little toehold in the arts world so that you can dabble in whatever your heart fancies!
