I have just one question: why?
So who will show up? Fernando from "Saturday Night Live?" Harry from "When Harry Meet Sally?" Mitch from "City Slickers?"
We'll see when the long and versatile career of Billy Crystal will be saluted Oct. 11 by the Kennedy Center. The center announced today that he is the winner of the annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
I think this is a worthwhile question to ask of musicians too. Which deserve a pass on their garbage because of their moments of greatness? And for which does the garbage overwhelm the greatness?

I give Rod Stewart a pass for his handful of kick-ass singles in the first half of the '70s and his work with Faces. Rock 'n Roll artists must be appreciated for their great work. It's an ephemeral art form and market.
Jonathan Richman also gets a pass from me, mainly because, unlike Stewart, I don't have to hear his less good stuff everywhere.
But, you know, the Cure, for instance? I like that first record. But is it enough to excuse everything that came after?
