"Your Mother Should Know"...In True Stereo
The Beatles, "Your Mother Should Know" (German true stereo mix)
Yet another song I lifted the needle on religiously as a boy, the German true stereo version of "Your Mother Should Know" is very cinematic. This is another phrase that I cringe at stating in public - next I'll go on about some movie that sucked but had a "great screenplay" - but the air around Paul's bass, the piano, and the vocals really do fulfill a desire to create a sound Paul had been plucking away at for some time and had never done so well. I'll take this song over "When I'm 64" and "Honey Pie", for instance, not that that's saying much. Still, this mix of "Your Mother Should Know" should have been the final word on Paul's "granny" songs, thereby saving the world from Give My Regards to Broad Street.

i agree with you, mod, i would take this over many of paul's more annoying tin pan alley / songs for your mum. it's mercifully short.
for one thing, it's got much better drumming and that hiccuping bass is pretty cool.
but somehow it feels rote.
You guys are such a bunch of brown-nosing Lennon wannabes -- I simply don't understand anybody who sniffs at McCartney gold like this song, "She's Leaving Home" and "Penny Lane." "Penny Lane" is absolutely brilliant, perfection in two-and-a-half minutes. Seriously, the way you give hall passes to "Blue Jay Way" and "Yer Blues" while slagging this kind of Macca material off is downright embarassing.
Having said that, there *are* some Paul songs I can't listen to for cheeseball reasons: the aforementioned "Honey Pie," "When I'm 64" and "Hello Goodbye" (though the problem with that one is mainly the fact that it's two minutes too long, not that it sucks per se).

neither of us really dislikes this song (forgot to mention that i don't skip it), and we both dislike "honey pie" and "when i'm 64". i share your disregard for "hello goodbye", your taste for "penny lane", too.

This is a good point: This song does not make a whole lot of sense. It says, let's sing an old song -- so old, it's older than your mother, who's really old. But she should know this song anyway, even though she's really old, and this song is even older. She should know this song because it was a hit, such a big hit that it will supersede any senility on her part. Because your mother, again, is really old.
Maybe that's why the song is unfinished and repetitive. It's logic is rather circular, don't you think?
