Last Man Standing: Bands Named After Lyrics of Other Bands

08/24/07 | by sammymaudlin

Lyrics and/or Song Titles count. Cite the source for those of us that are lyrically challenged. (Hint: I got this idea from a recent RTH post.)

I'll get it rolling with:

Baby Lemonade- from Syd Barretts song of the same name
A Cetain Ratio- from Brian Eno's "The True Wheel"

I had no idea that was where A Certain Ratio came from. There was a band called Burning Airlines too (from the song on Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain).

And of course there's The Rolling Stones, from the Muddy Waters song.

Radio Birdman-from the song 1970 by Iggy and the Stooges off of Funhouse. The Aussies misheard "radio burnin..."

The Smiths seem to have an influence on a lot:

* Panic! at the Disco, from Panic by The Smiths
* Pretty Girls Make Graves, from The Smiths
* Lawrence Hayward's (Felt, Denim) band Go Kart Mozart from the lyrics of Blinded By the Light (Springsteen)

Death Cab for Cutie (from the song the Bonzos perform -- synchronicity! -- in Magical Mystery Tour).

there's a band called "eric's trip" after the great Lee Renaldo noisefest on sonic youth's "daydream nation".

there's also a band called the "gigolo aunts", after syd's tune.

One unexpected one: anarchist punks Crass named themselves after a line in Ziggy Stardust.

Crap - that Eric's trip one *sooo* should have been mine! ;)

* The Nazz, took their name from "The Nazz Are Blue" by The Yardbirds...

"And if the Nazz don't help me baby,
You better forget about me too."

sally_c, I'm surprised at you. You didn't mention your very own Jennifer Gentle from Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam".

Yes that's the band led by Jay Robbins after Jawbox broke up. They broke up after 3 albums. Unfortunately, Jay's infant son has a rare genetic disease. You can help pay their mounting medical bills by buying this comp here:

On a much lighter note, my vote goes to the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, who are of course named after the opening line in "Search and Destroy". I thought it would be especially appropriate on this blog given how much everyone here loves Raw Power, right? :-)
