Hissing Fauna's Gift of Music

I really like this song for a number of reasons. It sounds like some modern wall-of-sound, without being annoyingly shoe gazey. The singer's voice might be a little cloying but it has a really great melody. The lyrics are a highlight of the song for me. Unlike a lot of modern music, this song isn't weighed down by depressing existentialist angst that can be heard in the Arcade Fire or Radiohead or whoever it is Pitchfork Media is hailing as the saviors of music. I think optimism in music is a great thing, because it can really be uplifting to the listener. That's why I love songs like Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea", or "Wouldn't it Be Nice", or Songs in the Key of Life. Lyrics like "and the question is, was I more alive/then than I am now?/I happily have to disagree;/I laugh more often now, I cry more often now,/I am more me" appeal to me a lot because as a teenager, I have to deal with the overwhelming pessimism all the people at my school seem obsessed with spreading.

I like this. I think I know who it is which makes my liking it even more surprising as I thought of this band as a one-off novelty act.

I like the Jesus & Mary Chain guitar sound and appreciate that they didn't drown me in it like the JMC.

I too am a fan of positivity, though not exclusively. I feel the ratio of of negativity to positivity in music is sadly disproportionate. Am I being negative by saying this?

As for this
as a teenager, I have to deal with the overwhelming pessimism all the people at my school seem obsessed with spreading.

My experience is that this doesn't stop after school only that I have more opportunity to surround myself with those I want.

I've been thinking about checking into the Neutral Milk Hotel for a night or two. I'm going to check these tracks out.

Thanks Hissing Fauna.

No they're definitely not and though I've only heard their latest Writers Block, it varies so much stylistically from the one song they're most known for that I don't think that would be a fair assessment. Plus, they have 2 previous albums, too.

Regardless, I like this song, too. I just wish I could remember what it was called. I had this album on my iPod earlier this year but I whittled it down to just a few songs ("Young Folks" and "Amsterdam"). Now hearing this makes me wanna revisit it since I liked it, but wasn't blown away.

Thanks, Hissing Fauna. This song is much different than the other couple of songs I'd heard by these guys. I wish the rhythm section could have mixed it up a bit, but I like how they did the heroic/anthemic thing without reverting to Bono-isms.

Thanks for the song, hissing fauna! I'm kind of ambivalent towards it. I'm pretty sure I know who it is because my favorite record store digs them and plays them a lot when I stop in.
