Live Performances of Rock Songs Used to Enhance a Film?

12/22/07 | by Mr. Moderator

Today I watched two great old movies back to back: To Have and Have Not and Night of the Hunter. Each film effectively worked in live performances of music - with the characters singing in an otherwise nonmusical film - to enhance the story, the tone, the plot. This is a device that has been used to great effect in a number of films, including many by Robert Altman, Tender Mercies, O Brother Where Art Thou, but how often has it been done successfully using a rock song or rock songs? I'm not talking about rock soundtracks of the Martin Scorcese/Wes Anderson variety. I guess that long, excruciating cover a Van Morrison by Jennifer Jason Leigh's character in Georgia is close to an example, but her character is a rock musician. Is there a movie in which a character simply picks up a guitar and bangs out a song? Will Ferrell does, come to think of it, in his "serious" film from the past year, when he plays "Whole Wide World". Any other examples that are that casually woven into the plot?

Not rock, per se, but Paul Newman singing about the "Plastic Jesus" in Cool Hand Luke definitely enhances that great movie.

(And I loved Ferrell's take on Wreckless Eric).

Factoid: That was almost going to be him taking on "Punk Rock Girl". We were even sent several pages of an early draft of the screenplay...changed at the last moment. But from what I've heard, the movie wasn't all that good. So maybe all for the best...

Wow! Cool factoid. The movie was OK. That scene was the highlight (and probably the key scene in the movie).

Cool near miss, Mrclean. The movie wasn't that great, but as Loophole said, his playing that song was the best part. More importantly, it probably made Wreckless Eric a nice chunk of change. From all I've heard he's a great guy, but I know for a fact that you guys are great.

How's about Otis Day and the Nights in Animal House? That was pretty awesome.

Air conditioning in Florida has been arctic to the extreme until this very instant when I get to the Ft. Myers airport. Now it's more like heating. I'm dyin' in here!

Good one, 2000 man. There's also Belushi smashing up that folkie's acoustic guitar on the frat stairwell, which is kind of related.

I'm actually curious if anyone had the same reaction to Bill Murray's "More Than This" in Lost In Translation. I thought it was amazingly beautiful. It got featured as a "funny part" in the preview but I found his off key performance quite heartfelt and deep. And I thought that that one moment in the movie summed his character up so nicely.

Or was it just a funny take on his SNL lounge singer schtick?

That version of "More Than This" is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I agree with you that it was the key moment in the movie.

I liked when Jack Black sang Let's Get It On at the end of High Fidelity.
