Under the Covers: The Eagles' Smoking Gun of Sucking in the Seventies

03/14/08 | by Mr. Moderator

This clip from Under the Covers, the actually interesting rock documentary of '70s So-Cal album cover artists Gary Burden and Henry Diltz, is believed to be the "smoking gun" of the moment when '70s rock 'n roll first took a hard turn for the worse.

The back cover shot documented at the end of this clip is one of rock's true "If only..." images.

I couldn't watch it. They started playing Desperado right at the beginning, and that made me retch. So, after two seconds, I still hate the Eagles so much that I'd rather not play than suffer through Desperado again.

I love it, 2K! I'm glad I'm not alone in my complete disgust with this band, but think about watching this stuff to do your part in ensuring that history does not repeat itself.

You know, if I found out this kind of juvenile, self-important horseplay went into the making of my favorite 19th century frontier-style album cover, The Band, I'd be sorely disappointed.

C'mon. Didn't you see how those guys "totally transformed into OUTLAWS"?

I guess Psychic Oblivion has a real downside, after all.

"... the parallel between the guitar player of the '70s and the gunslinger in the 1870s."

You know, if bad guitar players actually got killed, the mean and median guitar player would be much better.

I like that for an expert opinion on whether the Eagles' album was ultimately successful, they asked ... one of the Eagles.

They were assigned to come up with a cover for a concept record about the Old West and they take five minutes to explain how they came up with the awesome idea to dress them up like guys from the Old West. I'll take your word this is an interesting doc - this clip is unconvincing.

Well, Rick, "interesting" may not have been the most descriptive word. I found must of what I saw one night when I stumbled on it on PBS about a year ago difficult to turn away from. There was a segment on my favorite Doors album, Morrison Hotel, with outtakes from other scenes of Fat Morrison hagning with the skid row bums. After the Eagles, if memory serves, they went onto some more soft-serve So-Cal stuff, like America, at which time I could turn away from the tv and change the channel.

In January I was dining in La Jolla with coworkers; as we left the restaurant we passed a little gallery that was exhibiting the work of these guys. I was really sorry I wasn't able to see this stuff in person - again, for mostly "good-bad" reasons.
