What Do You Get When You Cross "Lou Reed" With "Sonic Youth"?

For some reason, this is what YouTube thought I might be looking for. It kind of makes sense, don't you think?

I tell ya what - it's got a genetic link directly back to that waycool Hunter - Wagner intro to 'Sweet Jane' offa Rock and Roll Animal. The dual guitar syncro-mesh harmonic riffage has long passed into Tap-ish cliche, but at the time it was fresh and unique. I can't think of any precursors and Thin Lizzy and BTO pushed the flaming hulk over the cliff - ON 11!!!

R&R Aminal was my introduction to Lou Reed (discounting 'Walk...') and I was always confused as to when he was gonna get back to that 'Big band' sound...I think I finally was slapped into reality by 'Dirt' - brother Lou wud not gon' be puttin' on de makeup no mo'...

You're right on again, King Ron. As much as I was giggling at that guitar noodling, that seemed to be the one logical link on the Lou Reed side of things. How Sonic Youth got into the mix I'm not sure.

The Allman Brothers Band was doing that dual guitar thing years before Hunter/Wagner.

Spot on, Big Steve! My stupid brain completely forgot the Allmans. And Deep Purple. I also thought of the Ventures using that motif, and really you can probably trace back thru Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant or the Bob Wills bands with Eldon Shamblin and Noel Boggs and the like...

Still, the Dick Wagner - Steve Hunter duo demonstrates the pupal stage of that element of theatrical staccato-pickin'-showoffsmanship that 'Jani and Syu' are so famous for, but which was conspicuously absent from the Allmans ouvre - is 'taste' the word I'm looking for?

Like the King of Prussia sez: 'Too many notes. Just take a few out and it will be perfect!"

Oh, also I believe that 'Syu' is the literal translation of 'Sonic Youth' in Whaddahfookyatalkin...

The real question is, where can I get one of those red vinyl jumpsuits?

And I found it refreshing that neither guy made guitar faces while engaging in seated shredding.

You're right, BigSteve, the matter of fact expressions of the guitarists were refreshing, although I'm still waiting for the day of "Face Guitar," when two dudes square off to make rock soloing faces while their guitars make no actual sounds.

All this reminds me of one of my favorite rock quotes, actually uttered by a bass player I played with in college. (Many of you know *exactly* who I'm talking about.) Somebody was describing his playing, and called him out on his excellent deployment of "rock faces" at just the right moment in any song. He replied:

"Man, those aren't rock faces. Those are PORN faces!"

Genius!

Awesome shredding, and the video is just the right length. There is a lighting glitch in the second part where the red haired dude's arm shows the scar where he had his right hand removed, bionics installed, and then reattached so the he can hit a million notes per minute without the need to dig deep and pull out the rock face. The Asian guy must have some power cell in the jumpsuit so that he can avoid using the rock face.

Shredders are cheaters like that, but they have to do things like fireproof their hair because those speeds generate such intense heat. That jumpsuit may actually have fire retardant materials and a cooling system as well as auxiliary shred power. Very impressive!

They make exactly the kind of faces I make when trying to fit all the little plastic pieces of my son's game back into the little plastic case they came in. And that's how it sounds in my head, too! Those of you who've seen me know the Great Things I could accomplish in a suit like that one! Yessss, the power... the Horror... Meanwhile, leave us not overlook the historic dual-shredding of Kookla and Ollie. (Frickin' Fran.)
