I think you should send Richard Lloyd a copy of this interview.

Lloyd's interview was quite the other side of the coin. This guy's got his head on straight.

This is awesome! This is the kind of stuff of which Mojo should do more.

Hey man, Mojo's got a lot to cover among The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd, and Dylan. See if you can find any room to cover other artists within 12 issues per year!

Richard Lloyd is supposedly coming back btw (sadly, not from another planet).

I only got Greatest Living Englishman off of emusic last week, in part because I knew this interview was coming up, but I guessed just from listening to it that Newell would be a perfect gentleman.

I think he exhibits a peculiarly English kind of niceness. Living in his small town is part of it, but he seems to have avoided the attendant small mindedness. He himself admits that giving up drugs at an early age (19!) saved him a lot of grief. And also quite frankly never having had anything approximating a big hit probably helped him maintain his sanity. He's a classic English eccentric who seems somehow to have made a place for himself in the world. Good on him.

I think I'm going to have to check out some of his other records. I may be giving the new Richard Lloyd a pass. We definitely don't have to worry that if he has a big hit he'll get weird.

Good read on the man, BigSteve. I'm telling you, his memoir really needs to be reprinted. I'd love to lend you "my" copy - and you too, Hrrundi, Andyr, and many more - but as a friend checking out the interview reminded me this morning, I've had his copy in my possession for the past 2 years! Beware, those of you who lend this scatterbrained man - me, not Newell - anything!

Mad props to Mark Hershberger for the book loan!

Great job on the interview, Mr. Mod!

I've been trying to find that book for more than a couple years now. I learned of it not that long after it was published but it was already out of print. And the print run must have been 17 or something for how rarely it pops up online (and when it does it's $50 and up)

I just placed an interlibrary loan order for the book. Almost all libraries, even public libraries, are supposed to be able to get you a copy of a book you want if it isn't in their collection. Unfortunately our records show that the only US library owning a copy of this book is the Library of Congress. Strangely our book distributor Blackwell lists it as available in their ordering database, but that doesn't mean they have a copy in stock.

Has anyone tried contacting the author himself/tracking him down via the interweb? That's how I got my beloved copy of that out of print Badfinger biography that I'm usually relating some story or another from. The author was really cool about it and put up a copy on amazon right away for me to buy. Sometimes if authors are anything like musicians, they have copies sitting under a bed somewheres... or not if they've given them all away (even their own copy!). Just a thought though.

I don't know this guy's music at all, but having interviews of this kind on this list is a really welcome addition. In this case I understand a lot more about some music that I've never heard--enough to make me interested in hearing it. Doesn't happen often.

Glad you dug it, Mwall. They're a lot of fun on my end, too. I've got another interview to conduct in the coming days, if I can find a free hour, and then more to chase after that. If any Townsperson has a favorite underground artist to interview and wants to get something in the works for the Hall, let me know. Thanks.

I think you should interview Lou Reed and try to find out how his music was meant to sound.

I just found my CD of Greatest Living Englishman (on the original Humbug label). It's been 10+ years since I have listened to this CD. I remembered every word. how did I let this one get away?
