Sounds of the Hall in roughly 33 1/3 minutes!

In this week’s edition of Saturday Night Shut-In Mr. Moderator returns from a trip to St. Louis, Missouri, where he met up with his RTH partner in crime sammymaudlin and another old college friend and musical mentor. It was the first time the 3 of them were in the same place in nearly 30 years. It was a tremendous time. Your moderator will use tonight’s episode to continue processing all that went down.

  1. Best American Punk Band? Great question. Is it X? Maybe. What do you consider Pere Ubu? Hard to categorize.

  2. Ooh, that’s a good one, eggman. I may like Pere Ubu even a touch more than X, but I consider them “proto-punk” or somehow above or outside punk. I know that’s a bit of a cop out. I’m fine with either selection, but I may lean toward X because they communicated on a more direct, human-scale level, which is part of the “punk ethos.”

  3. Proto-punk is probably a good characterization of Pere Ubu. Like the Clash, they started one place and ended another. In the case of Pere Ubu, they’ve been all over the place. You have to admit that “Life Stinks” communicates on a pretty direct level.

  4. No punches pulled on that song.

  5. You are correct, Mr. Mod. Dry ribs are the way to go!

  6. Maybe this has been discussed here before — but X turned teenager me on to Jefferson Airplane. I think Exene and John’s vocals are very close to what Grace and Marty had going on in some ways.
High Flyin’ Bird is a good example.
