{"id":11597,"date":"2012-01-17T16:08:42","date_gmt":"2012-01-17T21:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/?p=11597"},"modified":"2012-01-17T16:08:42","modified_gmt":"2012-01-17T21:08:42","slug":"once-and-for-all-country-rock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/once-and-for-all-country-rock\/","title":{"rendered":"<em>Once and for All<\/em>: Who Launched Country Rock?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"data\" value=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/onceandforall.swf\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/onceandforall.swf\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/onceandforall.swf\" data=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/onceandforall.swf\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>In the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/please-explain-laura-nyro-in-the-rock-n-roll-hall-of-fame\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Laura Nyro<\/strong> thread<\/a> <strong>Townsman alexmagic<\/strong> made some hyperbolic statements regarding <strong>Mike Nesmith<\/strong>. (Seriously, Mike Nesmith \u201cis the most indefensible omission from the Hall of Fame?\u201d I think I could successfully defend his exclusion from the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame as easily as I could defend his exclusion from the Baseball Hall of Fame.)\u00a0However,\u00a0he touched on one point\u00a0that I think the uni-mind that is Rock Town Hall should explore, to whit, the thought that Mike Nesmith is \u201coften given credit for launching the &#8216;country rock&#8217; genre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There seem to be a lot of candidates for that. There are <strong>The Byrds<\/strong>, whose <em>Notorious Byrd Brothers<\/em> showed a bit of country and was released in January 1968, or the more often cited <em>Sweetheart of the Rodeo<\/em>, released in August, 1968. The latter made it all the way to #77 on Billboard and featured a number by another candidate for country rock launcher, <strong>Bob Dylan<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cYou Ain\u2019t Goin\u2019 Nowhere.\u201d<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q21BF38W3Gs?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>And there\u2019s <strong>Graham Parsons &amp; the International Submarine Band<\/strong>, whose <em>Safe At Home<\/em> came out in 1968. Wikipedia says their b-side cover of Buck Owens&#8217; \u201cTruck Drivin\u2019 Man,\u201d released in April 1966, is \u201cnow largely considered the first country rock recording.\u201d It starts at 2:11 of the following clip:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-Xnp20QcH0s?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>Dylan\u2019s <em>Nashville Skyline<\/em> came out in April, 1969, and that album was presaged by \u201cDown Along the Cove\u201d and \u201cI\u2019ll Be Your Baby Tonight,\u201d the final two cuts on <em>John Wesley Harding<\/em>. I know at various points in my life I\u2019ve heard Nesmith solo recordings but none ever made an impression on me. I don\u2019t know how influential he was but I know none of his albums charted any higher than #143. Here\u2019s \u201cJoanne\u201d from that album:<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nBQUvL0RQY8?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>And there is <strong>Rick Nelson<\/strong>. <em>Rick\u2019s Bright Lights &amp; Country Music<\/em> came out in 1966, <em>Country Fever<\/em> came out in 1967, <em>In Concert The Troubadour<\/em> in 1969, and <em>Rudy The Fifth<\/em> in 1971, the latter two featuring future Eagle <strong>Randy Meisner<\/strong> in Rick\u2019s band. Rick continued in a very country vein for several years and albums more. Here\u2019s a performance of \u201cLouisiana Man\u201d in 1969, with Rick\u2019s <strong>Stone Canyon Band<\/strong>. That song was on <em>Bright Lights &amp; Country Music<\/em>, which also featured \u201cTruck Drivin\u2019 Man\u201d:<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2xitdq3OZlk?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>Can Rock Town Hall decide\u2014<em>once\u00a0and for all<\/em>\u2014who launched country rock? Was it Mike Nesmith or Gram Parsons or Roger McGuinn or Bob Dylan or Rick Nelson? Or was it someone else?
