Although I never cared much for any of her songs beside the outstanding &#8220;You&#8217;re So Vain&#8221; and, OK, I&#8217;ll admit it, her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nogoodforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/carlysimon+jamestaylor.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">duet<\/a> with <strong>James Taylor<\/strong> on &#8220;Mockingbird,&#8221; there was a sense of <a href=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B000002I2Q.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">anticipation<\/a> over the release of each new <a href=\"http:\/\/crocmusic.com\/images\/albums_large\/283\/carly_simon_boys_in_the_trees.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">album cover<\/a>. With her <a href=\"http:\/\/eil.com\/Gallery\/252088b.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">XL smile<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thriftyfashionista.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/450188_Carly-Simon.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">sleepy eyes<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bessbyers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/3vfsnaus8sd3suss.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">soft,\u00a0flowing\u00a0fabrics<\/a>; a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_bQ0SqifjNcg\/TE_CAtH3hYI\/AAAAAAAAZhY\/EOnYEYcS6vA\/s1600\/carly-simon-feet.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">flexible<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/sleevage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/carly-simon-playing-possum-1977_gallery_popup.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">acrobatic<\/a> posture; and a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shakenstir.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/carly2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">soap operatic personal life<\/a> Simon was rock&#8217;s safe-as-matzo Jewish American Princess. She wasn&#8217;t\u00a0tangled up in that smelly CSNY crowd,\u00a0like <a href=\"http:\/\/static.guim.co.uk\/sys-images\/Arts\/Arts_\/Pictures\/2010\/4\/23\/1272011167514\/Joni-Mitchell-in-1970-001.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Joni Mitchell<\/a>. She wasn&#8217;t a practitioner of witchcraft, like <a href=\"http:\/\/leblow.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/stevie_nicks_31.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Stevie Nicks<\/a>.\u00a0She made no claims to being\u00a0&#8220;one of the boys,&#8221; like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corbisimages.com\/images\/Corbis-PN009978.jpg?size=67&amp;uid=29cf63b4-257f-470c-8a12-e171ce1579e2\" target=\"_blank\">Linda Rondstadt<\/a>.\u00a0Carly was all woman, more like one of my Mom&#8217;s younger waitressing friends than a rock star yet not half as square as a <a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-yjUe3J594kw\/Tfz4jsENf4I\/AAAAAAAAOww\/U0e18Zejnys\/s1600\/Barbra%2Band%2BKris.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Barbra Streisand<\/a>, who couldn&#8217;t manage an acute angle alongside renegade <a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_tJqLMeMew3E\/Sj86dneDEBI\/AAAAAAAAA6Q\/VzqQuCY_r-A\/s400\/kris-kristofferson-hotel.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Kris Kristofferson<\/a>. For a middle-class boy venturing into the world of sexual longing and rock &#8216;n roll, she was as pervasive and\u00a0only mildly daring\u00a0as a woman&#8217;s subscription to <em>Cosmopolitan<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As I got into my later teens and became both more judgmental and daring, the mid-&#8217;70s appeal of Carly rapidly diminished. By 1981, when the likes of Debbie Harry and Exene were my maturing\u00a0notions of rock womanhood, I had no idea the following video ever existed, of a song called &#8220;Vengeance,&#8221;\u00a0which thankfully I don&#8217;t recall ever hearing. Talk about an ultimate rock soft-on. Carly&#8217;s &#8220;confident&#8221; over-the-shoulder stare at the 12-second mark explains why this fine-looking woman was not able to crossover into an acting career.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>0:34\u20130:37:<\/strong> Thankfully the camera pulls back from Carly&#8217;s Cheshire Cat mouth just at the point when she leans over to remove the Captain&#8217;s hat and flip back her mane, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RijTch6B5WE\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rita Hayworth<\/strong>-style<\/a>. Now, perhaps, the trace of teenage boy still left in me can\u00a0focus on\u00a0the humble joys of just-post-prime Carly Simon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11687\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11687\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11687\" title=\"carly2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly2-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly2-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly2.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A hair-raising sequence.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>0:45\u20131:00:<\/strong> Free from the Captain&#8217;s hat, Carly enters\u00a0a hair-raising, Farrah-inspired\u00a0sequence. Strong stuff\u00a0that&#8217;s offset by another brief cut to the chrome-domed Levin. The music is still terrible, mind you, but that\u00a0barely factored into my initial 13-year-old interest in this artist. Anyhow, without knowing or even thinking I remember any of the details of Simon&#8217;s 1983 split from Sweet Baby James, I sense this video was constructed by Carly and her director as an act of pre-separation empowerment. To establish her credibility as a &#8220;real musician&#8221; she has surrounded herself with the finest studio cats money could buy. Is it any coincidence that her next long-term relationship following JT was Gadd&#8217;s rival for studio drumming, the more easygoing <strong>Russ Kunkel<\/strong>? (I can imagine Simon first having made a play in vain for Gadd,\u00a0a studio\u00a0musician whose\u00a0monk-like devotion to his craft enabled him to\u00a0develop his\u00a0signature &#8220;Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover&#8221; drum roll.) &#8220;Who&#8217;s Captain, now?&#8221; she seems to be saying.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11688\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11688\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11688\" title=\"carly3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly3-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly3-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly3.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">High five!<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1:10\u20131:43:<\/strong> Shot almost entirely in profile, this sequence is meant to let you know that Carly&#8217;s not only Captain of this ship but the the masthead. The keyboardist\/boatswain of this vessel\u00a0rears up to provide backing vocals. After punctuating a line with a raised hand and a fierce stare Carly allows herself to break a smile as she turns to congratulate her rhythm section for helping her navigate this difficult course. The sense of accomplishment expressed by the rhythm section is mutual and palpable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1:50:<\/strong> A glimpse of Carly&#8217;s black bra is evident, putting the viewer in touch with his inner 13 year old.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11689\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11689\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11689\" title=\"carly4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly4-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly4-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly4.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angus?!?!<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2:05\u20132:23:<\/strong>\u00a0Carly\u00a0suddenly appears with an\u00a0awkwardly held, strapless\u00a0Gibson SG to rip out a solo?!?! This is a video; why didn&#8217;t someone first think to yell\u00a0<em>Cut!<\/em> and get her strapped into that bad boy?\u00a0Now, as I imagine I may have felt had I seen this video when it first aired, I am confused and distracted by competing thoughts regarding her technique, her sudden resemblance to <a href=\"http:\/\/fc01.deviantart.net\/fs71\/i\/2010\/178\/3\/a\/Angus_Young___ACDC_by_Jess_MacGowan.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Angus Young<\/a>,\u00a0and how\u00a0all this\u00a0colors her unique place in Rock Womanhood. To her credit she chose not to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/holstering\/\" target=\"_blank\">holster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2:24\u20133:25:<\/strong> Carly begins pumping her arms\u00a0and doing a not-so-appealing hip sway.\u00a0Thinking back to\u00a0the supreme sense of satisfaction provided by her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RijTch6B5WE\" target=\"_blank\">Rita Hayworth-referencing hair flip<\/a>, I now fear the converse, the extreme sense of disappointment in a\u2014there it is, at the <strong>3:12 mark<\/strong>\u2014<em>Thanks for those dance lessons, Mom!<\/em> white-girl dance routine. As with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0d1C1qQ_VoI\" target=\"_blank\">Hayworth in <em>Gilda<\/em><\/a>, the dance sequence works like Kryptonite against the powers of the hair toss.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11690\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11690\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11690\" title=\"carly5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly5-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly5-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/carly5.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&quot;Hold it...4, 5, 6...&quot;<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>3:26\u2013end:<\/strong> Carly grabs the mic off the stand and drives home the end of this song with everything she&#8217;s got, with Gadd pounding freely in ways his best-known employer named Simon, Paul, would not allow.
