RTH Interviews Chris Spedding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"image_block\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/users\/sammymaudlin\/speddinggump.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_legend\">I&#8217;ve been everywhere, man.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>At the risk of having this large chunk of rock stride the pond and pummel me with his Flying V, I can&#8217;t help but think of <strong>Chris Spedding<\/strong> as &#8220;The Forest Gump of Rock.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It seems unflattering, but I really don&#8217;t intend it that way.  I&#8217;m not thinking of him as a borderline short-busser with high-water slacks.  I&#8217;m thinking of him as a dude who has participated in an AMAZING amount of rock history and yet, other than weirdos like us, he&#8217;s fairly unknown. (At least in the US of A.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_block\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/users\/frankenslade\/speddingparka.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"221\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_legend\">&#8220;It will be a cold day in hell before you get me to work with Zwol!&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Chris Spedding, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/blogs\/rth\/Motorbikin.mp3\">&#8220;Motorbikin'&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I first read his name in college as I became enamored with <strong>Brian Eno&#8217;s<\/strong> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FHere-Come-Warm-Jets-Eno%2Fdp%2FB00022M518%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dmusic%26qid%3D1202351605%26sr%3D8-1&amp;tag=rotoha00-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">Here Come the Warm Jets<\/a><\/em> and saw his name on the back as playing on <strong>&#8220;Needle in the Camel&#8217;s Eye&#8221;<\/strong> and the <strong>&#8220;Paw Paw Negro Blow Torch&#8221;<\/strong>.  I had no idea then and not much more of one until recently that this guy has done a wee bit more than that.<\/p>\n<p>Early on Spedding, with his band <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search?ie=UTF8&amp;keywords=battered%20ornaments&amp;tag=rotoha00-20&amp;index=music&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">Battered Ornaments<\/a><\/strong>, played <a title=\"http:\/\/www.ukrockfestivals.com\/stones-in-the-park.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ukrockfestivals.com\/stones-in-the-park.html\" target=\"_blank\">THE Hyde Park concert<\/a> in 1969 that featured the debut of the Brian Jones-less <strong>Rolling Stones<\/strong>.  Bridge that with being the producer on <strong>The Sex Pistols<\/strong> demos and you start to get an idea of the breadth of experience here.<\/p>\n<p>He has worked with so many amazing people that I&#8217;ll only list one for each letter of the alphabet (except x, y &amp; z): <strong>Laurie Anderson, Ginger Baker, John Cale, Donovan, Drifters, David Essex, Bryan Ferry, Art Garfunkle, Nicky Hopkins, Kris Ife, Elton John, Dave Kubinec (featuring <a title=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php?title=once_and_for_all_the_fifth_rutle&amp;more=1&amp;c=1&amp;tb=1&amp;pb=1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php?title=once_and_for_all_the_fifth_rutle&amp;more=1&amp;c=1&amp;tb=1&amp;pb=1\">fifth Rutle Ollie Halsall<\/a>), John Lodge, Paul McCartney, Harry Nilsson, Gilbert O&#8217;Sullivan, Pretenders, Dee Dee Ramone, Dusty Springfield, Johnny Thunders, Vibrators, Tom Waits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>His story is pretty damn cool and there&#8217;s some great stuff on his website <a title=\"http:\/\/www.chrisspedding.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisspedding.com\" target=\"_blank\">chrisspedding.com<\/a> and a 2006 biography, aptly titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FChris-Spedding-Reluctant-Guitar-Hero%2Fdp%2F0595402097%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1202332445%26sr%3D1-1&amp;tag=rotoha00-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">Reluctant Guitar Hero<\/a>, so I won&#8217;t belabor it. And so are U2.  And I probably could kick the shit out of them, one at a time, but they do seem very nice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RTH:<\/strong> You\u2019ve declared that you\u2019ve had no interest in following the blues-rock guitar style made popular by the likes of Eric Clapton. Did your &#8220;anti-Clapton&#8221; approach factor into Jack Bruce choosing you to play on his <a title=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FSongs-Tailor-Jack-Bruce%2Fdp%2FB00008A8LI%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dmusic%26qid%3D1202351985%26sr%3D1-1&amp;tag=rotoha00-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FSongs-Tailor-Jack-Bruce%2Fdp%2FB00008A8LI%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dmusic%26qid%3D1202351985%26sr%3D1-1&amp;tag=rotoha00-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">debut solo album<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>CS:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know \u2013 you would have to ask Jack. I think my decision to adopt an \u201canti-Clapton\u201d approach was a negative one and not a good move. It only lasted a couple of years and I got over it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><big>I was never a \u201cCool Uncle,\u201d more of an embarrassment to them, I think.<\/big><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>RTH:<\/strong> I became exposed to you via Brian Eno&#8217;s <em>Here Come the Warm Jets<\/em>. How did you get involved?<\/p>\n<p><strong>CS:<\/strong> I met Eno &amp; Phil when my band, <strong>Sharks<\/strong>, supported Roxy during Eno\u2019s last tour with the band. I met <strong>Fripp<\/strong> touring with <strong>Centipede<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_block\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/users\/frankenslade\/speddingsharks.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_legend\">Chris is the Shark with the best hair<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Sharks, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/users\/frankenslade\/Sharks_DoctorLove.mp3\">&#8220;Doctor Love&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>RTH:<\/strong> There are some raw, almost Stones-y recordings of you playing live with Brian Eno floating around. Somewhere I&#8217;ve got a live version of &#8220;The Paw-Paw Negro Blowtorch&#8221;. On an Eno website there&#8217;s mention of an unreleased documentary made around these sessions. What is the story behind these recordings and the documentary?<\/p>\n<p><strong>CS:<\/strong> It\u2019s the first I\u2019ve heard of this. I don\u2019t ever remember playing live with Eno. I don&#8217;t remember cameras at the studio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RTH:<\/strong> Is it true you turned down an invitation to join <strong>The Rolling Stones<\/strong> following the departure of <strong><a title=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php?title=mick_taylor_s_mick_taylor&amp;more=1&amp;c=1&amp;tb=1&amp;pb=1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php?title=mick_taylor_s_mick_taylor&amp;more=1&amp;c=1&amp;tb=1&amp;pb=1\">Mick Taylor<\/a><\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>CS:<\/strong> Sometime in the late spring, early summer of 1975, <strong>Jagger<\/strong> called me and asked what I was doing in August. I replied I\u2019d been booked to tour with <strong>Roy Harper<\/strong>. Jagger said that was a shame cos the Stones were touring USA at that time.  That\u2019s about the substance of the conversation. No offers were made and nothing was \u201cturned down.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_block\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/users\/frankenslade\/spedding.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>RTH:<\/strong> By the time punk came around, so many of your contemporaries had gone back to Sheffield to make cabinets, but you managed to soldier on and do work with <strong>The Vibrators<\/strong> and <strong>The Sex Pistols<\/strong>.  How did you hook up with these snot nosed punks?  We\u2019re you like the Cool Uncle to that crowd?<\/p>\n<p><strong>CS:<\/strong> <strong>Chrissie Hynde<\/strong> took me to a Pistols gig at the 100 Club in early 1976. <strong>Malcolm McLaren<\/strong> and <strong>Vivien Westwood<\/strong> made all my retro &#8217;50s outfits. That was how I got involved. Do you have any particular memories from those sessions? What was it like re-cutting some Roxy Music songs on a Ferry solo album alongside Phil Manzanara? Did Ferry and Manzanara express any feelings about competing with their band&#8217;s legacy?<\/p>\n<p><strong>CS:<\/strong> I never worked alongside Phil in the studio. We recorded at different times. I enjoyed that period and thought I did some good work. (Not the \u201cSpedding Tapes,\u201d which I\u2019ve read were not your original versions.)  Can I have a copy?  (I\u2019ll trade you for a Rock Town Hall T-Shirt.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CS:<\/strong> Dave Goodman copied my tapes, adding echo. I have no idea why he did this. My tapes are the ones without echo and low-fi versions of them taken from a 1976 cassette were included by Virgin Records on the reissue of \u201cBollocks\u201d put out at the time of the first reunion. I had the studio masters of the tapes. Still have a digital copy on a CD. No one at Virgin asked me for the originals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RTH:<\/strong> There seems to be some mystery regarding your involvement with <strong>The Bay City Rollers<\/strong>.  Please take this opportunity to set the record the straight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CS:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t think I played on any of their sessions. I may have done since the band members were rarely at recording sessions (except for the lead singer). One band member (forget who) and one session guy (drummer Clem Cattini) thinks I played on the sessions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RTH:<\/strong> You\u2019ve participated in a vast number of musical genres but your solo work has a definite blues\/rock\/rockabilly bent to it. If it sounds like me it\u2019s cos I didn\u2019t succeed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RTH:<\/strong> It seems that you\u2019ve done more with Robert Gordon than any other individual artist.  Is that accurate?  How did you guys get together?  Looks like you\u2019re touring in 2008. I think <strong>Ray Cooper<\/strong> was on percussion too.<\/p>\n<p><ins>Did the inside of EMI\u2019s Harvest label offices smell more of weed or Nick Mason?<\/ins><\/p>\n<p>I never ventured inside and I doubt Nick did.<\/p>\n<p><ins>Elvis or Eddie?<\/ins><\/p>\n<p>Costello or Van Halen?<\/p>\n<p><ins>Is that a Triumph in the &#8220;Motorbikin\u2019&#8221; video?<\/ins><\/p>\n<p>I have no idea.
