Meanwhile, in the Rock Town Hall Neutral Zone, Captain Oats of the Starship Rockulon sparked up one glowing dilithium crystal in the communal love bong and posited the question: “which rock artistes deserve both our love for having succeeded so mightily on their first album… *and* our scorn for then having let us down — continually, perennially, and depressingly — in that one brilliant album’s aftermath?”

I say again: the time has come!

Let me explain: every now and again, the stars line up, my brothers and sisters. For it was in the midst of all this universal chaos that I finally — FINALLY — scored a Holy Grail of thrift store vinyl; an album that would provide a foundation for a formalized, annual, soul-searching exercise where we shove our collective thumb in the eye of the rock and roll Establishment by nominating: not The Best of anything, but the acts that simultaneously prove Rock’s ability to heal, ignite, inspire, purge, and lift up — as well as Rock’s tendency to depress, disappoint, let down, and generally crawl up its own ass in a most embarrassing fashion. The album I found, in near-perfect condition, for 99 cents, in a Korean thrift store was: Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man, by The Bob Seger System.

Finding this record — reputed (and rightly so) to be Bob Seger’s one Great statement of “underground” promise — set into motion a cascading series of events involving The Back Office; various Townsmen, who got a sneak preview of the record in order to correctly ascertain the magnitude of its excellence; and, finally, our redoubtable Mr. Moderator himself. It was determined that the existence of this Rock document ought to stand for something — ought to, if you will, exemplify the “rock, as you love it and hate it” credo that powers the Hall. And, more specifically, that it ought to empower us to reach out to the world, in the middle of the upcoming Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame canonization/circle jerk, to say: “Hear, world, and be comforted: the real, eternal value of this thing we call Rock is found in the half-baked, the impulsive, and the fleeting efforts of momentarily inspired dipshits like you and me — and like Bob Fucking Seger!”

So it is that we come to the RTH Rock and Roll Foyer of Fame, and its First Annual Bob Seger Memorial Partial Lifetime Achievement Awards and Chili Cookoff. The task at hand is twofold: first, to listen attentively to the tracks I furnish below. After those of you SUMMONED to opine and generally show off have had your say, we need to turn to some serious business: winnowing through the thoughts and general bullshittery that accompanied Oats’ fine “One and Done” post to yield four finalists in the “GOD, but this band was a major fucking disappointment!” category, so that we might “vote” on them and subsequently issue an honest-to-God press release, in time to rightfully steal a celestial pound or two of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s thunder in March.

I shall leave it up to Mr. Mod and the Back Office to set up the machinery for the nominations and voting that need to occur between now and March 10, 2008 — that being the day that the RRHoF is due to tell us that (among others) The Ventures, Johnny Cougar Mellencamp, and Madonna will be inducted into their pantheon of Greats.
