Unless you&#8217;re really old and really cool &#8211; or really young and only think you&#8217;re cool &#8211; chances are you came across this performance long after suffering the inevitable mixed feelings brought on by the likes of the following number:<br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gdz_G1VGJ4c?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll leave our Townswomen out of this, although it&#8217;s possible a few women in the world have a taste for the chunky guitar riffs and <strong>codpiece<\/strong>-clad, medieval hi-jinx promised by Classic Tull.  If you listen between the lines, so to speak, you may hear a combination of the fractured blues of <strong>Captain Beefheart<\/strong> and the newly forged metal of <strong>Black Sabbath<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;He said &#8216;snot.&#8217; Huh, huh&#8230;huh, huh!&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n<small><em>I know Dr. John and Saturnismine are down with this one!<\/em><\/small><br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-U18E8gWzVM?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of &#8220;Teacher&#8221;, <strong>&#8220;Hymn 43&#8221;<\/strong>, and a couple more from that <em>Aqualung<\/em> era. Those songs rock, and they&#8217;re not much goofier than a lot of other cool songs I feel more accepted for liking. I bet you know what I&#8217;m talking about.<\/p>\n<p>All the while, however, you know there&#8217;s this <strong>elongated &#8220;concept&#8221; crap<\/strong> lurking in the shadows. [BEWARE: Please skim through this long piece, unless you&#8217;re a real glutton for punishment.]<br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4uJ6W_hVq-E?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So what do you do but dig around for evidence of other Tull performances that live up to some of the promise of the band&#8217;s big hits while avoiding the more embarrassing bits?<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n<small><em>Wish the mix was better&#8230;<\/em><\/small><br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NBujaAumqPU?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><small><em>Wes Anderson needs to use this one in the background of a scene with some twee guy studying his tennis swing in a mirror&#8230;<\/em><\/small><br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LQq44-sWzoQ?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><small><em>That Ian Anderson sure had some hippie charm&#8230;<\/em><\/small><br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zUpW5JYv1nY?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But sooner rather than later you&#8217;re confronted by the embarrassing bits&#8230;and then there&#8217;s the <strong>flute<\/strong>.<br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cRo5whIbau4?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Townsmen <strong>Mockcarr<\/strong>, <strong>Mwall<\/strong>, <strong>General Slocum<\/strong>, and others who&#8217;ve struggled with these Tull issues, please step forth to share your thoughts.
