As this article points out, they were maybe not as distinctive, unique and rock-crit-friendly as Pavement, Superchunk, Guided by Voices, and others. But they were reliable and breezy. They had a great handle on guitar parts that moved seamlessly between grinding and jangly. Their songs were often briskly rhythmic and effortlessly melodic—sometimes even heart-rending—without ever devolving into fussy, overarranged prock.

The band has always been led by its two singers, guitarist Richard Baluyut (right, above) and bassist Fontaine Toups (center). For most of the band’s existence, Richard’s brother Ed (left) has played drums. Arguably, the band’s best albums are the ones that featured another Baluyut brother, James (not pictured) on second guitar.

Maybe what I like most about Versus is the way they come across as cool and urbane and yet folks-next-door. This was the great thing about indie-rock, before it became all about beards, NPR, and acoustic guitars. Discovering and re-discovering Versus is like discovering and re-discovering the city all over again. Not a particular city, necessarily; just the idea of The City as a place where you can meet like-minded individuals, have your horizons subtly expanded and so forth. This music makes me want to go to coffeeshops and used bookstores and get a job in the doomed field of alternative-weekly journalism all over again.

“Circle,” from their first full-length The Stars Are Insane (1994), is a good indication of the way the band can move from being kinda aggressive to something that melodically soars. I like the way Toups’ voice rises up against the guitars in the chorus. I don’t like My Bloody Valentine much, but this is sort of what they would sound like on a tighter budget, right?

Dead Leaves (1995) collects early singles and comp tracks. The AV Club ranks it alongside Odds and Sods, Black Market Clash, and others. My favorite from this album is “Tin Foil Star,” where the band starts to get epic, in their own way.

Up until this point, Versus always had one foot in the noisy, obtuse end of the underground. They are named after a Mission of Burma album, after all. But when they signed to Caroline Records in 1996, they really let the pop hooks loose. Secret Swingers (1996) and Two Cents Plus Tax (1998) are brimming with sunny melodies. The latter album is especially great. Too bad that by the time it came out, it was pretty much all over for this kind of music getting on the radio and MTV. Also, these two albums are now out of print, which is a minor tragedy and a major bummer. Listen to “Underground” and marvel at how confidently the band attacks it. The vocal back-and-forths, the guitar arpeggios, the Great bridge, the thrill of the slam into that last chorus—it’s all awesome.

What’s that, you say? You want to hear Versus cover a song you probably already know? Well, sure; here’s ELO‘s “Shangri-La,” from an EP that also features a Versus song called “Shangri-La” and covers of the Kinks’ “Shangri-La” and “Out in the Streets” by the Shangri-Las.

After a 10-year hiatus, Versus returned in 2010 with On the Ones and Threes. Unfortunately, the tempos and song-lengths drag more than usual on this album. Plus, James Baluyut is out of the band again, and I miss the two-part guitar interplay between him and Richard. Still, any band that can come up with a song like “Scientists” still has the goods, in my book.

Pages: 1 2 3

It’s (almost) summer in the city; perfect weather for listening to Versus, a band I’ve been wanting to write about on RTH for a while now.
