Did you ever gaze at the iconic image of Bob Dylan and his squeeze, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phawker.com\/2008\/05\/14\/npr-4-the-def-giving-public-radio-edge-since-2006-32\/\" target=\"_blank\">Suze Rotolo<\/a><\/strong>, on the cover of <em>The Freewheelin&#8217; Bob Dylan<\/em>, and think something to the effect of, &#8220;Wouldn&#8217;t it be nice?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure how long into adulthood the effect of a rock squeeze lasts &#8211; and the artist can&#8217;t be too much older than his squeeze without the whole thing coming off as sleezy and cliched, but a good Rock Squeeze at the right time in an artist&#8217;s career &#8211; and the right time in the artist&#8217;s fans&#8217; lifetimes &#8211; softens the image of the rock star, brings him down to earth, makes him even more like you as a young, idealistic rock nerd, that is, if you had more charisma and a more happening social life. <\/p>\n<p>Think of the role <strong>Anita Pallenberg<\/strong> played in softening the image of at least 2 Rolling Stones:<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_block\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/blogs\/rth\/sqanita1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_legend\">Anita and Brian sitting in a tree&#8230;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image_block\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/blogs\/rth\/sqanita2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"344\" height=\"344\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_legend\">First comes love, then comes marriage&#8230;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Among the <strong>keys to a great Rock Squeeze<\/strong> are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Soft looks and flowing hair<\/li>\n<li>At least a seeming lack of possessiveness<\/li>\n<li>The capacity to party with not only her man but her man&#8217;s bandmates<\/li>\n<li>A public profile that is as mysterious as her photographed image is well known.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other words, the Rock Squeeze should be all woman, totally supportive of her boy-genius man, and keep her mouth shut\/not spend too much time on her own career. The supermodel\/actress types that the likes of <strong>Mick Jagger<\/strong> and <strong>Rod Stewart<\/strong> have been known to tote don&#8217;t cut it. No one goes &#8220;ooh&#8221; or &#8220;ahh&#8221; when they saw pictures of Mick and <strong>Jerry Hall<\/strong>.  You may have had some strong thoughts regarding Jerry and <strong>Britt Eckland<\/strong>, but they probably weren&#8217;t of the sweetly romantic variety.<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3G1UbXx2gHc?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>Sadly, there aren&#8217;t many rock wives, in the traditional sense of &#8220;mate,&#8221; who are thought of anywhere near as highly as these Rock Squeezes. Are there any? Once or twice in a rock nerd&#8217;s life we&#8217;ve found ourselves appreciating the loving gaze of <strong>Yoko<\/strong> and her man, but quickly we&#8217;re back to seeking opportunities for cutting up on the woman as punishment for her role in breaking up The Beatles. And <strong>Linda McCartney<\/strong>? That woman couldn&#8217;t catch a break during her lifetime with Paul, which by all accounts was as sweet and idyllic as any marriage in rock. Even in death, and following Paul&#8217;s disastrous marriage to <strong>Heather Mills<\/strong>, Linda continues to be a butt of jokes.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_block\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/blogs\/rth\/sqmountaingirl.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"241\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_legend\">&#8220;Uh, he said that chick&#8217;s named, &#8216;Mountain Girl, heh heh heh.'&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mountain_Girl\" target=\"_blank\">Mountain Girl<\/a><\/strong>, Jerry Garcia&#8217;s longtime Rock Squeeze, was a great concept among Rock Squeezes! She came complete with a superhero Rock Squeeze name, like the embodiment of a <strong>Neil Young<\/strong> song. I was never a Deadhead, but I&#8217;d always heard about Mountain Girl. Part of Jerry&#8217;s appeal was that he was the big, stoned teddy bear of rock, right? How endearing was the thought of furry Jerry and his kid sister-looking squeeze? Adorable! (OK, she was his wife, but in Mountain Girl&#8217;s case even a wife can be a squeeze.)<\/p>\n<p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t17UZbiBSXU?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><br \/>\nMaybe my least-favorite rock flick, <em>Almost Famous<\/em>, poses the possibility of the Groupie as Muse, the STD-Carrying Groupie with a Heart of Gold. What do you think, would this make the Groupie a plausible Rock Squeeze? I&#8217;m skeptical, mainly because I can&#8217;t stand that fluff piece of a rock flick. but the real-life case of <strong>Bebe Buell<\/strong>, who straddled the Groupie-Rock Squeeze divide, as well as Todd Rundgren, Steven Tyler, Elvis Costello, et al, makes a case for this possibility. Look at the following photo of Bebe and her little girl, <strong>Liv Tyler<\/strong>, who grew up thinking that Todd was her father when, in fact, it was Steven. <em>Ooh. Ahh.<\/em> <\/p>\n<div class=\"image_block\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/blogs\/rth\/sqbebe.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"491\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_legend\">Ooh. Ahh.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Tell us about a key Rock Squeeze and her role in your appreciation of an artist you dig. Are there still Rock Squeezes among today&#8217;s younger bands?
