Not obscuro &#8220;cool&#8221; bands that no one knows about but people like us, but bands that cranked out their share of hits that even intelligent music lovers like ourselves tend to overvalue? Here&#8217;s an imagine exchange between me and one of you that illustrates what I&#8217;m getting at.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> You know what pisses me off?<\/p>\n<p><strong>You:<\/strong> What now?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> When a band like <strong>The Rascals<\/strong> is taken for granted?<\/p>\n<p><strong>You:<\/strong> Huh?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> Yeah, The Rascals: &#8220;Groovin&#8217;,&#8221; &#8220;I&#8217;ve Been Lonely Too Long,&#8221; &#8220;I Ain&#8217;t Gonna Eat My Heart Anymore&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You:<\/strong> Yeah, I know\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;People Got to Be Free,&#8221; dare I say &#8220;Good Lovin'&#8221;\u2014not the Dead&#8217;s version!<\/p>\n<p><strong>You:<\/strong> Yeah, yeah, I know The Rascals. They&#8217;re in the Rock &#8216;n Roll Hall of Fame, aren&#8217;t they? How&#8217;s that taking them for granted?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> Let me explain&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xEfN-elFcqA?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, no matter how strong a case\u00a0for the actual <em>great<\/em>ness of the The Rascals\u00a0I and anyone who joins me can muster, you and your rock-snob friends will likely wake up and take moment to marvel at the 3 truly great songs by <strong>The MC5<\/strong> before digging through your import posthumous collections in search of a few decent previously unreleased covers of <strong>Seeds<\/strong> tracks or whatever. &#8220;The Motor City Five fuckin&#8217; rocked, man!&#8221; you&#8217;ll mutter enthusiastically in the general direction of your cat.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the day a friend will call you and ask if you want to meet up with him at a reunion show featuring 2 original members of <strong>The Saints<\/strong>. &#8220;I&#8217;m there,&#8221; you say, &#8220;I&#8217;ve been waiting for Bailey to reunite the original band since <em>Prehistoric Sounds<\/em>!&#8221; Your friend does not examine the fact that you were a 14-year-old living in Ottoville, Ohio at the time of the original lineup&#8217;s dissolution.<\/p>\n<p>That night you meet your friend at a corner dive for a few cheap beers on tap before hitting the show. The Rascals&#8217; &#8220;How Can I Be Sure&#8221; plays in the background. You half-notice it while discussing last night&#8217;s playoff game. &#8220;I hate show tunes,&#8221; you blurt out before continuing with your analysis of Kozma&#8217;s 12-pitch walk.<\/p>\n<p>As you wait out the &#8220;reunited&#8221; Saints&#8217; set in vain for a performance of &#8220;Church of Indifference&#8221; you will have completely forgotten the magic moments we turned you onto the day before, such as <strong>Dino Danelli<\/strong>&#8216;s drum fills that kick off the fade of &#8220;What Is the Reason.&#8221;<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-iwH88JMXcE?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>You will have forgotten how you managed to look past the band&#8217;s Young Rascals-era skorts about midway through this tasty version of &#8220;Since I Fell for You.&#8221;<!--nextpage--><\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VooYUkU8yLA?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>The morning after The Saints reunion, while you&#8217;re combing through Brother Records-era <strong>Beach Boys<\/strong> releases in search of a not-embarrassing track you haven&#8217;t spun in some time, the winsome soul of &#8220;A Girl Like You&#8221; will have completely slipped your mind.<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_Yx6VwgsowQ?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>As garage bands from the &#8217;60s went, The Rascals were the boutique garage that specialized in European sports cars.\u00a0As &#8220;blue-eyed&#8221; soul bands from the &#8217;60s went, it&#8217;s an insult to suggest they were great at soul music <em>for their race<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to take The Rascals for granted, as some &#8220;fun&#8221; &#8217;60s band with a cool drummer. They were that, but they were really, really good. They were like a self-contained <em>Nuggets<\/em> album. When you&#8217;re scraping the used bins in hopes of finding that great lost album, consider buying a pre-<a title=\"The Rascals' See\" href=\"http:\/\/spookyshobbyshop.com\/RASCALS%20See%20LP%20Vinyl%20Record%20Album.JPG\" target=\"_blank\">Dashiki Rock Rascals album<\/a> instead, although a few gems can even be found on those last couple of records.
