What if I&#8217;m put on the spot about the works of this artist and do not have a clear point of view? It could be embarrassing! So I click a link on the InterWeb and arrive at a bio or interview that tells me more about this artist than I would have ever thought worth knowing. Maybe you&#8217;ve done this too.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tvi-TEkbxqk?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><br \/>\nRecently I stumbled across the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chip_Taylor\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia page for songwriter\/musician <strong>Chip Taylor<\/strong><\/a>. The name was familiar, and as soon as I saw he was the writer of The Troggs&#8217; <strong>&#8220;Wild Thing&#8221;<\/strong> some synapses started firing. He also wrote <strong>&#8220;Angel of the Morning&#8221;<\/strong>, which has the same chord progression. <em>Yeah, right!<\/em> I thought to myself, as if I&#8217;d been sitting at a bar with fellow rock nerds. Efficient guy, that Chip Taylor!<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GDLmfAkaXw4?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>As a service to Townspeople who might find themselves similarly stumped for talking points on Chip Taylor, I will run through a few facts and observations that you might find handy the next time his name crops up at a gathering of rock nerds. Taylor also wrote &#8220;Any Way That You Want Me&#8221;, which was a hit for The Troggs. The following version, by <strong>Evie Sands<\/strong>, is pretty cool. If you&#8217;re a songwriter and you ever think you&#8217;ve reached the end of the line with the use of the I-IV-V chord progression, think again!<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4-iX_cKtnfw?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>Taylor, I learned, also wrote my favorite Hollies song, <strong>&#8220;I Can&#8217;t Let Go&#8221;<\/strong>. This one&#8217;s a little different than the straight I-IV-V device used in other hits, and before I generalize unfairly about the guy&#8217;s songwriting palette, he also wrote distinctive hits for everyone from <strong>Willie Nelson<\/strong> and <strong>Waylon Jennings<\/strong> to <strong>Janis Joplin<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Janis Does Chip<\/strong><br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XEpbytFS-Nk?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Waylon Does Chip<\/strong><br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f8MjOj9TSiM?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s enough music info to get you going the next time Talyor&#8217;s name pops up at a party full of music geeks (or more likely at the front counter of a record store). (Prior to launching his music career, he&#8217;d tried making a living as a professional golfer.)<\/li>\n<li>Taylor appeared in <em>Melvin and Howard<\/em>, a movie I was just talking with a friend about at a baseball game the other night.<\/li>\n<li>In 1993, he returned to music with <strong>Carrie Rodriguez<\/strong>, who happened to be playing a club in Portland, ME the night after I attended a show there just a few weeks ago.
