He said something to the effect that in <strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The Beatles<\/span><\/strong> song <strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">I Want to Tell You<\/span><\/em><\/strong>, penned by Harrison, that he wished he had reversed the lyric,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But if I seem to act unkind<br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #339966;\">It&#8217;s only me, it&#8217;s not my mind<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThat is confusing things<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>to be something more like<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But if I seem to act unkind<br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #339966;\">It isn&#8217;t me, it&#8217;s just my mind<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThat is confusing things<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I admit that I could be butchering this story but I&#8217;m pretty sure that I have the gist of it. It stuck with me because I used to think that about that part of that song before I heard Harrison thought it too. It&#8217;s kinda obvious isn&#8217;t it? &#8220;Me&#8221; is so much more than &#8220;mind.&#8221; Anyhoo&#8230; Here is the only version I could find where it is sung by Harrison in this reversed way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UyyOYt24U64?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unfortunately it is a pretty crappy version of the song, \u00a0IMHO. It doesn&#8217;t help that <strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Eric Clapton<\/span><\/strong>, I think, is part of this performance as well. Feel free to Pince Nez me Townsfolk.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage-->This Harrison thing sprang to mind recently as I watched, for the first time, the Jonathan Demme \u00a0performance flick <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Storefront Hitchcock<\/span><\/strong>. I strongly reccommend this DVD for anyone that is a Robyn Hitchcock fan. Whereas the songs he plays aren&#8217;t, for the most part, favorites of mine, the unusual setting, minimal instrumentation and Hitchcock&#8217;s particular rantings are all an idiosyncratic delight. But I digress.<\/p>\n<p>To the point here is the song, <em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Airscape<\/span><\/strong><\/em>, which originally appeared on the 1986 <strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Robyn Hitchcock &amp; the Egyptians<\/span><\/strong> release <strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Element of Light<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. I love this album and especially love this song. Here it is as originally released.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xnS5kQWWs0I?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0At about the 3:25 mark, Robyn sings,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And in the element of laughter<br \/>\nThe quick explosion and the slow<br \/>\n<em><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Release of heat, you<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not sure abou that &#8220;you&#8221; at the end but, again, half-assed Googling seems to claim it is there.<\/p>\n<p>However&#8230;he cha, cha, changes this in the stark and beautiful version he does in <em>Storefront Hitchcock<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YGVOx7NQPM4?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At about the 5:40 mark Robyn sings,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And in the element of laughter<br \/>\nThe quick explosion and the slow<br \/>\n<em><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Return of sorrow<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I admit that &#8220;the slow release of heat&#8221; is more ethereal, evocative and poetic than &#8220;the slow return of sorrow.&#8221; But &#8220;the slow return of sorrow&#8221; feels much more appropriate, to-the-point, and emotional.<\/p>\n<p>From a\u00a0<em>creative writing<\/em> POV I could argue that the original is better but, not unlike the Harrison change, the latter is more true to the song.
