{"id":2088,"date":"2009-03-29T00:15:09","date_gmt":"2009-03-29T04:15:09","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-03-29T00:15:09","modified_gmt":"2009-03-29T00:15:09","slug":"whaddayouknow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/whaddayouknow\/","title":{"rendered":"Whaddayouknow?!?!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"image_block\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/media\/blogs\/rth\/Thelodger1944.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"451\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Saturday morning, while watching the 1944 film <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcm.com\/tcmdb\/title.jsp?stid=81666\">The Lodger<\/a><\/em> (a remake of a 1927 Hitchcock film), starring my man <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/overlookedgems.blogspot.com\/search?q=george+sanders\">George Sanders<\/a><\/strong>, I had a few <em>Whaddayouknow?!?!<\/em> moments, that I&#8217;ll take the liberty of sharing.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nfsVNUU5cIo?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><br \/>\nThe musically relevant moment came toward the end of the film, when Merle Oberon&#8217;s character is performing in a play attended by a character who is a lodger at her house and is suspected of being <strong>Jack the Ripper<\/strong>. The jaunty musical number being performed sounded familiar. Then I realized it was essentially my favorite song by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/2007\/07\/02\/the_longest_concert_ever_as_slow_as_poss\">Fiery Furnaces<\/a><\/strong>, &#8220;Single Again.&#8221; After hearing their second album, <em>Blueberry Boat<\/em>, I likely would have never bought an album by them, but hearing &#8220;Single Again&#8221; on WPRB one night a few years ago had me curious. My main man <strong>Townsman Geo<\/strong> recommended the 10-song <em>EP<\/em> from which that song came and the rest was history. I&#8217;ve since bought one other album by them, <em>The Philadelphia Experiment<\/em>, I think it&#8217;s called. Plenty of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/2008\/01\/31\/the_turning_point_double_shots_on_me\">good stuff on that one too<\/a>. Anyhow, I had NO IDEA in all the years I&#8217;ve owned this album that &#8220;Single Again&#8221; was a take on a traditional song. Figures&#8230;on many levels.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing that caught my attention in this film was that the suspected Jack the Ripper character had my surname! I never paid much attention to the Jack the Ripper story, and a minute of research this afternoon said that the Ripper was never caught or identified, so this character&#8217;s surname was fictional and not one more black spot on my bloodlines.
