I know what the general feeling has been but <em>All Things Must Pass<\/em> is a classic by almost anyone\u2019s standards. And <em>Living in the Material World<\/em> has enough charms that I bought the reissue a few yeas back to supplant the old vinyl copy. And I bought the big comeback, <em>Cloud Nine<\/em>, way back when and remember liking it well enough (even if I don\u2019t remember too much of it very well now).<\/p>\n<p>Over the last several decades I thought I should try some of the maligned records that came out between <em>Material World<\/em> and <em>Cloud Nine<\/em> but never had; after all, how bad could they be? Back a decade ago after George died a box set of all the <em>Dark Horse<\/em> material came out and that tempted me.<\/p>\n<p>Thank the music gods that I resisted!<\/p>\n<p>I recently borrowed the one disc <em>Best of Dark Horse, 1976-1989<\/em>, and it is stunningly pedestrian. There\u2019s one cut that would deserve to go on a true Harrison best of, &#8220;Blow Away,&#8221; thanks to a stellar chorus. And I\u2019d listen to \u201cGot My Mind Set On You,\u201d \u201cCrackerbox Palace,\u201d \u201cWhen We Was Fab,\u201d and\u00a0\u201cAll Those Years Ago\u201d all the way through if they came on the car radio (although \u201cWhen We Was Fab\u201d belongs more on an <strong>ELO<\/strong> album &#8211; and not a greatest hits ELO album).<\/p>\n<p>And the other 10 tracks, well, if that\u2019s the best of the Dark Horse albums then they must be horrible. I won\u2019t subject any of you to any of them here; seek them out at your own risk.<\/p>\n<p>Am I being too harsh? Why did he even bother putting out this dreck? And is there a worse <em>Best of<\/em> than this? No cheating on that last question; we all know <strong>Christopher Cross<\/strong>\u2019 <em>Best of<\/em> sucks (at least I presume it does).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the years I\u2019ve thought I wanted to delve more deeply into George Harrison\u2019s solo catalog.
