Get a job!<\/p><\/div>\n

I have a friend\u2014a friend of the Hall, actually\u2014and he\u2019s got a problem.<\/p>\n

About 10 years ago, after getting laid off, he spent a month or so writing and recording a series of demos for an unfinished album\u2014called simply Job\u2014<\/em>about his work experience. Now, 10 years later, he\u2019s rediscovered this lost album, and wants to share it with anybody who might care. The unfortunate thing is, it\u2019s a pretty frank examination of just how soul-crushing it can be to, you know, work<\/em>\u00a0for a living\u2014which means if he ever wants to get hired again, he can\u2019t attach his name to the thing, which means there\u2019s no real point to finishing it. It\u2019s an interesting existential dilemma, really: is there a point to releasing music unless it\u2019s under your own name? Don\u2019t we do all this creative stuff for essentially ego-driven reasons? And so forth. Anyhow, his need for anonymity is important, because, as it happens, he\u2019s in between jobs again.<\/p>\n

I told him: not to worry\u2014the weirdos at Rock Town Hall will understand your need to remain nameless, but will also furnish you with the feedback you\u2019re looking for. He said that would be great, and sent me the tracks to post here. I\u2019ll get one up every few days, so as not to overwhelm.<\/p>\n

Oh, and one other thing: this guy (we\u2019ll call him \u201cBD\u201d) tells me that there are a number of tracks on the album that were written in collaboration with a few Town Hallers. He instructed me not to \u201cout\u201d them unless they specifically give the okay\u2014because, again, some of the material on Job<\/em> is pretty career-hostile.<\/p>\n

Make sense? You guys okay with this? If so, here\u2019s the first track, with BD\u2019s impromptu liner notes, explaining what we\u2019re listening to here:<\/p>\n

Track number one is called \u201cEnergize Me,\u201d and\u2014I dunno, I think it\u2019s pretty self-explanatory. It sets the stage for the rest of the operetta, insofar as it\u2019s spiteful and depressing. Note that I ripped off\u2014sorry, paid tribute to\u2014the almighty riff that starts off Nixon\u2019s Head\u2019s \u201cThey Can\u2019t Touch Us.\u201d God, that is such a great song. Please note that this track, like all the others you\u2019ll be hearing, is a demo<\/em>. So it\u2019s got some rough production edges.
