I suspect you agree I’m a kinder, gentler, wiser Mr. Moderator. It’s not only apathy that’s kept me from saying anything about the sudden, premature death of founding Eagles member Glenn Frey. It’s also maturity. And increasing fear of The Reaper.<\/p>\n

I hadn’t planned on posting any snarky thoughts Frey’s death, and I still won’t, but some Guardian<\/em> piece lambasting people for mocking Glenn Frey’s death while celebrating David Bowie’s<\/a>, which a friend posted on his Facebook feed has me feeling like, I don’t know, the meaner, harsher, more ignorant Mr. Moderator of old.<\/p>\n

The holier-than-thou tone of the Guardian’s subtitle was enough to make my blood boil:<\/p>\n

Who’s this Guardian<\/em> writer to call younger, nastier, less-afraid-of-dying himself me a hypocrite<\/em>? Call Younger Me and my ilk rude<\/em>, immature<\/em>, disrespectful<\/em>…sure, but where does it say anyone needs to pretend that Bowie and Frey’s life works need to be considered on the same playing field? Can’t we be respectful while staying true to our own tastes and feelings? I tried, in my reply to my friend’s Facebook post. For the record, after being up there in his thread for nearly 12 hours, I have yet to receive a single Like<\/em>. I’m not sitting by a large window, looking out at the rain, as a single teardrop rolls down my cheek, but I am a bugged enough to share my thoughts on the death and life of Glenn Frey. I hope my\u00a0words help as you process this passing:<\/p>\n

The subtitle of that piece that you link to is such click-bait. I’m not even going there. I’m confident in saying “I hated the Eagles.” I’m old enough and respectful enough now to sincerely feel bad about anyone dying young, but honestly, when I heard the news that Frey died I thought, “Mmm, the biggest asshole in the biggest asshole band died. That’s a shame.” For the record, I was sincere in feeling bad over the man’s dying. I just don’t like the Eagles. Never did. Still don’t. I can enjoy “Take It Easy” enough and a couple other of their earlier country-rock songs, but I don’t like the vibe they give off once they tried “rocking.” A couple of those late-period songs that Timothy Schmit (sp?) sang are funny-good. So, that’s where I stand on the death of Glenn Frey. I’m too mature to “mock” his death, but I don’t have to pretend I\u00a0cared about his life.*<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
