{"id":23522,"date":"2020-05-02T11:47:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-02T15:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/?p=23522"},"modified":"2020-05-02T11:47:01","modified_gmt":"2020-05-02T15:47:01","slug":"please-turn-me-on-to-tom-petty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/please-turn-me-on-to-tom-petty\/","title":{"rendered":"Please Turn Me On to Tom Petty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last night, I plowed through a whole shit-ton of extremely unfunny sketch comedy from the SNL rip-off &#8220;Fridays,&#8221; in order to catch some fine performances by the likes of the Clash (fantastic; their first US TV performance), Graham Parker (good), Pat Benatar (don&#8217;t laugh &#8212; why is &#8220;Hit Me With Your Best Shot&#8221; not held in the same esteem as Blondie&#8217;s hits from the era?), and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the performance that really made me sit up, notice, and newly appreciate was this one, by a guy I&#8217;ve always relegated to the second tier of 1980s\/90s rock-for-dudes-who-eventually-traded-their-jeans-in-for-pleated-khakis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tom Petty Performs &quot;American Girl&quot; (Live) - Fridays\" width=\"695\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b2nbHpF7-qk?feature=oembed&amp;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I began to wonder if I&#8217;d gotten early Petty all wrong.  Was he &#8212; at least at one point &#8212; the American Lowe\/Parker\/Costello?  Can you show me what I should listen to in order to figure Tom Petty out?
