This is a difficult topic for me to write about, because for all my god-given deficiencies for rock ‘n roll stardom, from having a “big-boned” build only suitable for being a member of The Guess Who<\/strong> to the even-more challenging hurdle of an overall lack of talent, I am blessed with a good head of rock hair. At nearly 57, my hair is wavy, thick, and still maintaining enough of its original territorial hairline borders that, even as I run a few weeks past my usual time for a haircut and wild, wiry tufts won’t behave, I don’t run the risk of being called the “bald guy with long hair,” like David Crosby<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, sometimes I panic, walk up to my wife, turn around, and ask her if I’ve got a bald spot. I notice continued traces of thinning at my part line and, for a few seconds, allow myself to silently mourn those lost follicles in front of the bathroom mirror. In hair terms, I’m basically the multimillionaire asshole who’s griping about the hardships of our current pandemic lockdown on the economy, the business owner who’s laying off “nonessential” staff to keep his investors happy. I apologize profusely for being, possibly, the wrong messenger to cover the topic of Hollies drummer Bobby Elliot<\/strong>‘s cutting-edge role as a balding, hat-wearing fashion pioneer. But someone’s got to tell this story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

We’ve covered Rock’s Questionable Hats<\/a>. We’ve covered headbands<\/a>, a headwear-related device that has sometimes been suspected as being employed to manage a receding hairline. However, I searched the archives and couldn’t find a full-on survey of hats in rock ‘n roll. I’m sure it’s in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I dug further into my research, I learned that someone already HAS told the story of Bobby Elliot’s role in bringing hats into rock ‘n roll. So, to give credit where credit is due, I think it’s best that you visit this piece, from The Future Is Past blog<\/a>. It even captures the shocking, “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”-period employment of a wig. Thankfully, Bobby came back to his stylistic senses and re-embraced rock’s finest collection of hats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poke around the web – or better yet, watch the excellent, no-nonsense Hollies documentary, Look Through Any Window<\/em>, on Amazon Prime – and you’ll even see Bobby pull off the extremely difficult rock beret<\/strong>, complete with a silk scarf<\/a> or ascot. The guy is dripping in style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even in 1983, in when fashion atrocities like cap sleeves overtook this reunited version of the band, Bobby Elliot is well ahead of the curve. You can see him bashing away back there on his kit with a stylishly shaved head, years before the Michaels – Jordan and Stipe – made this Look trendy. And before I leave you, make sure you appreciate that the man is not only a fashion pioneer but a fantastic drummer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
