My apologies to fans of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Boston Red Sox, and the Minnesota Twins for not being able to prepare you for your teams’ getting swept out of their Division series battles owing to inferior playlists. Red Sox fans, however, must have had a clue once it was announce that Rocco Baldelli and one of the coolest playlists in baseball was being left off the team’s postseason roster.

This evening the Philadelphia Phillies have a chance to eliminate the wildcard Colorado Rockies in frigid Colorado. The Phillies starting eight is not that different than last year’s World F’in’ Champions‘s lineup, so much of our focus will be on what noise the Rockies are bringing. We’ll dig into the Phillies’ playlist in more detail when – I’m sorry, make that if – the Phils continue to the NLCS.

Both skippers in this series, the Rockies’ Jim Tracy and the Phils’ Charlie Manuel, have made it clear that they’re managing with all hands on deck. We’ve already seen Manuel use three starting pitchers out of the bullpen/off the bench in Game 2, and in last night’s game, both Tracy and Manuel had their starters on a short leash. The walk-up music of the expanded, fluid bullpens will be key in this series, and the Rockies prepared for just this situation by acquiring former Dodgers’ lefthanded situational reliever Joe Beimel prior to the trade deadline. We know what Beimel brought to last year’s NLCS, and this year he’s back with a new, hip walk-up tune.

Joe Beimel’s situational walk-up music:

To date, the results have been impressive. Last night Beimel entered the game earlier than usual, with runners in scoring position, to set the mighty Ryan Howard down on one pitch.

Another late-season bullpen acquisition by the Rockies, setup man Rafael Betancourt, packs closer-quality walk-up music, Ram Jam‘s “Black Betty.”

By leaving middle reliever Josh Fogg off the postseason roster, the Rockies will miss out on the additional fist-pumping, car jamming tuneage of “Slow Ride,” by Foghat!

The Phillies have put a dent in closer Huston Street, who uses the instrumental version of Nas‘ “Hate Me Now.” We’ve covered Nas before; the guy’s a foul-mouthed tool, and you know what I think about anyone who uses an instrumental version of a foul-mouthed song?

That’s right, Rockies fans, this is playoff baseball, and this is when those walk-up tunes that proud baseball purists like myself grumble about during the regular season actually come into play. You don’t believe me? Who’s put more heat on the Phils in this series than young Carlos Gonzalez, or CarGo, as his teammates call him?

OK, his walk-up song sucks, but the video’s use of dune buggies and dune booties has an undeniable motivational effect.

The Rockies’ lineup is loaded with tough line-drive hitters, but Charlie Manuel’s slew of lefthanded starters has minimized the impact of the walk-up tunes of lefthanded batters like Ian Stewart (“All the Above,” by Maino feat. T-Pain) and Seth Smith (“Jesus Freak,” by DC Talk). Smith is the National League’s strongest pinch hitter, with a heavenly .472 batting average, but he’s also a capable power stick in the lineup. With the Phillies’ Lord-praising J.C. Romero shelved for the season, Smith’s walk-up music is a clear ploy for getting God on his team’s side.

Righthanded hitting third baseman Garrett Atkins has taken advantage of his increased playing time against the Phils’ lefty starters. His walk-up music is Timbaland‘s “The Way I Are,” the title of which is as grammatically unsound as is Atkins’ glovework. Based on his performance to date, this tune actually blows a hole in my theory that walk-up music plays a significant role in the outcome of postseason baseball games. However, check out this video, and you’ll see why I’m confident that Atkins will eventually play down to his music.

Beware, Rockies fans, of a booted ball in tonight’s game by your starting third baseman. This ain’t futbol!

Before Game 3, manager Jim Tracy made a big deal about us not yet having seen the best of Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki. Although both veteran hitters are deservedly the most feared batters in the Rockies’ lineup, the long, just missed foul balls off the bat of Tulowitzki are not too different than the just-missed country anthem he uses for his walk-up music, Montgomery Gentry‘s “Roll With Me.”

The sweet-swinging Helton also displays his diminished aspirations each time he steps to the plate in the thin air of Denver:

It’s not looking good for the Rockies, not with the impotence of Clint Barmes‘ Rage Against the Machine selection, “Fistfull of Steel”; not with Dexter Fowler‘s Jay Z & Rihanna cross-marketing effort, “Run This Town”; not with benched All-Star Brad Hawpe‘s Nickleback number, “Rockstar,” hoping to make a heroic return from Tracy’s doghouse. The walk-up music of the Rockies’ everyday players is not fit for postseason play.

I should note here that Tracy, who strikes me as a skittish manager masquerading as a “hot hand” player, dropped All-Star pitcher Jason Marquis and his outstanding walk-up tune, Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower,” from the rotation. Instead of the veteran (if journeyman) Marquis starting Game 4, the weight of the 2009 Rockies’ season rests on the broad shoulders of young, talented Ubaldo Jimenez, who was last seen sitting in front of the heater in the Rockies’ dugout, wrapped in a Snuggli, and shivering like a stranded survivor of an airplane crash in the Andes. The young man tries to buck up his courage with the aid of something called “Crank That,” by Soulja Boy.

[video:dailymotion:x2q6rz_soulja-boy-crank-that_music]

Are you kidding me? To date I’ve been unable to determine what tune Phils’ Game 4 starter Cliff Lee uses, but it’s got to be better than the one Jimenez employs.

As I said, most of the Phils’ regulars have carried over their same tunes from last year. I’ll get into the walk-up music of 2009 new addition and Phillies Pholk Hero, Raul Ibanzez, when – I’m sorry, if – the Phils progress to the NLCS. Meanwhile, the most significant Phillies’ intro music news surrounds 2008 hero-to-2009 possible goat reliever Brad Lidge switch from his his longtime intro music, Drowning Pool’s “Soldiers” for Linkin Park’s equally apocalpytic “No More Sorrow.”

Pages: 1 2 3 4 5 6

Dance the night away I’m getting a late start on my series-by-series analyses of the walk-up music used by teams in the 2009 playoffs.
