During these difficult times, it\u2019s always a pleasure to know that relief is right around the corner via a back porch dinner with those you love, namely, the \u201cI promise to love you no matter how much of an asshole you are now or will become in the not so distant future\u201d wife; my sister, whose saved my ass on countless occasions; and her husband, one of those Survivor<\/em> types who can do and get through anything and still have a sense of humor. Last Saturday night\u2019s dinner was especially noteworthy because Supertramp Syndrome<\/strong> was finally fine tuned. It all began when Supertramp\u2019s \u201cLogical Song\u201d reared its ugly head in the middle of a fairly pleasant playlist that featured a lot of surprisingly good ’70s stuff. Tem seconds into the thing was all it took to bring on a plethora of horrible feelings: physical discomfort, embarrassment, shame, etc. Hence, Supertramp Syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Please note that it delivers something much different than feelings brought on by something like \u201cCome Sail Away\u201d or \u201cLady\u201d by Styx<\/strong>. These are indeed awful, but arguments can be made for their effectiveness. \u201cCome Sail Away\u201d has been saved by a Freaks and Geeks<\/em> episode, and \u201cLady\u201d is so majestically moronic as a celebration of one\u2019s superwoman that its intent can indeed be accepted and enjoyed on the rare occasion. Many would opt that Journey<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Stop Believing\u201d would make the cut as a standout Supertramp Syndrome track, but I beg to differ here. Years of my daughters\u2019 friends banging out the introductory piano riff on my out of tune piano have given the song a new life. It is not insufferable, and I have to give credit where credit is due. The intro is clever and memorable, and Steve Perry<\/a><\/strong> manages to make the rest of the thing heroic for misguided and tasteless human beings. And once in a while I count myself in with that gang of misfits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hell, me and the wife listened to a load of ’70s turds on the way home from New Jersey yesterday, including Dr. Hook<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cWhen You\u2019re in Love With a Beautiful Woman\u201d and \u201cSharing the Night Together,\u201d and I astounded myself by admitting I didn\u2019t mind hearing either of the ditties. Yes, when you\u2019re in love with a beautiful woman, it is indeed hard. And the rest of the reasons given by the redneck lead singer ring true as well. Any yes, when you\u2019re feeling lonely, sharing the night together with literally anyone can truly be a beautiful thing, especially during these godawful times. Don\u2019t get me wrong, Dennis Locorriere<\/strong> would never be categorized as a seer nor would he give Leo Buscaglia<\/strong> a run for his money concerning relationship ups and downs, but it feels good to know that I have a kindred soul when it comes to lovin\u2019 my woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same cannot be said for 99% of what Supertramp brings to the table. Most of what they serve is meant to show off technical wizardry and not much else. And when technical wizardry becomes the focus of what\u2019s brought to the table, that decision screws with the head and heart to such a degree that said performer\/performers are probably better off working in some type of promotional capacity for a Radio Shack-like operation. Supertramp Syndrome is indeed all about the question of balance, and the horrors brought on when the balance if offset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
