{"id":24014,"date":"2021-01-26T09:01:42","date_gmt":"2021-01-26T14:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/?p=24014"},"modified":"2021-01-26T09:01:42","modified_gmt":"2021-01-26T14:01:42","slug":"full-of-myself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/full-of-myself\/","title":{"rendered":"Full of Myself"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sometimes I catch a clip of Frank Zappa pontificating on culture and think to myself, <em>I don&#8217;t like that guy&#8217;s music, but I do appreciate how full of himself he is.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Frank Zappa on American culture\" width=\"695\" height=\"521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/88zvm7-fhKo?feature=oembed&amp;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I am accused, with some regularity, of being full of myself. I can&#8217;t argue with that. I am. I deeply believe that we should all be a little more comfortable with being full of ourselves. The more the merrier. That&#8217;s always been a driving concept behind <em>Rock Town Hall<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other times I catch an interview with Zappa and think to myself, <em>That guy is full of himself.<\/em> I had to bail on this clip, for instance, at the 2:20 mark, when he asks his interviewer, &#8220;Is that too technical?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>He smirks and takes a thoughtful drag on his cigarette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Frank Zappa interview 1974\" width=\"695\" height=\"521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rYu3UsNIXMM?feature=oembed&amp;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What most spoils my appreciation for Zappa&#8217;s sincere and beautiful self-absorption is when he pontificates about typical pop lyrics about love and falling leaves and whatnot. I wish I could find the clips from the <em>Classic Albums<\/em> episode on <em>Apostrophe<\/em> and some other self-indulgent album that preceded it. There were 3 instances of him ragging on pop lyrics and then explaining how his super-deep lyrics about dingleberries don&#8217;t fit into conventional song structures. The third time the documentary cut to a clip of him talking over that fusion music his 12-piece band cranked out like clockwork, I had to change the station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh Frank, you have the power to make me sick of myself. <em>Shut up and play your guitar!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Frank Zappa appearing on the Mike Douglas Show (28.
