For any 5 threads one of us has launched, there may be another thread that seems like a great idea for at least a few minutes but that you never get around to crafting and publishing as a fully realized piece on The Main Stage. Maybe you’re better at following through than I am. This is the case with my rock ponderings in these hallowed halls.

In The Back Office I have a number of thread ideas mapped out – or titles for future threads, if nothing else, saved and waiting for that day I get down to business and flesh out what I once envisioned would be a great topic. It’s not unusual that I eventually complete these ideas, maybe after drinking a late-night cup of espresso or seeing off some friends with whom I’d spent an evening reviewing my ideas. These are satisfying times; I feel like a real writer. Other times the very rough topic just sits there, eventually forgotten. I’m an optimistic guy when it comes to getting around to all the things I procrastinate doing, but sometimes it’s best to face up to my limitations and let some of my rough thoughts float away.

So that I don’t completely waste what might have been some decent ideas, following are topics that I have sat on for the past 2 years. Consider these threads I can no longer expect to ever complete in 2009. Maybe posting these “lost” topics here will inspire others to pick up where I left off. Maybe doing this will simply give these topics their proper burial place. By letting go of these topics before they clutter up The Back Office filing cabinets any longer, I envision a clearing of my own mind and the coming of new ideas, the kinds of threads that really need to be written. I sense I will experience a Sting-like feeling of contentment and self-satisfaction. Here goes!

Topic: Separated at Birth: Clean-Shaven Levon Helm and Middle-Aged Holly Hunter

Concept: This idea was spurred by seeing Hunter on a late-night show in the last year or two. With that middle-aged, raw boniness that comes from desparately improved exercise regimens and sagging skin, it struck me that Hunter looked a lot like a middle-aged Levon Helm but without his trademark beard. I was sure this would be a killer image to share, but I noticed that in touched-up still photos of middle-aged Holly, she lost some of that sharecropper’s edge. I’m pretty sure it was an appearance on Letterman that sealed the deal, but I could not find her appearance on that show. Instead, you’ll have to see if you can catch a glimpse of Beardless Helm in this Late Show appearance from 2008.

Topic: Townsman Sethro: A Rare Audiophile Who Manages to Avoid Becoming a Complete Asshole

Concept: Sethro is one of my oldest friends, the drummer in our band, and my dentist! He’s also the one audiophile friend from whom I’ll take any advice. Sethro rarely posts his thoughts. In fact, he doesn’t do a lot of talking in real life either, but get him talking and he’s got some novel ideas and insights. I thought I would interview Sethro regarding his ability to be an audiophile while resisting becoming one of those assholes who start buying late-period Steely Dan albums that were primarily made as dick-waving devices in high-end stereo stores.

Topic: What Are Your THREE Favorite Covers by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones?

Concept: This seemed like a necessary follow-up to a discussion or poll we had on which band was better at delivering covers, but shortly thereafter it was clear it would be overkill and would provide me nothing more than an opportunity to possibly cause trouble by challenging and otherwise subtly arguing against your selections.

You’re welcome.

Topic: Hard-Partyin’, Harder Rockin’ College Buddy and Biochem Brainiac Now Embraces Dave Matthews Band

Concept: This would have been a short story- or novella-length piece taking off on a real-life college friend of mine and Sammymaudlin’s from way back when. He was a high-energy, red-headed, hard-partying rocker who also happened to pull a 4.0 in his biochemistry program in between loading up his Pegasus bong and the constant fine-tuning of an honest-to-goodness light show he had set up in his room to accompany the blasting of Led Zeppelin and Rush (earlier in the evening) to chill-out time with early Genesis when the clock struck 2:00 am. “You guys can hang out,” he’d say to the remaining handful of partiers, as he moved to the other side of his room and began studying for his 10:00 am biochemistry final. Amazing! We have no idea what became of this guy, but I can’t help thinking he’s the middle-aged guy who now gets excited to see Dave Matthews on tour.

Part 2 coming soon (if I get around to it)! Rockin’ Viagra, an unpublished interview, and the review Griel Marcus never got around to writing.

Pages: 1 2 3 4 5

Over the course of any year in Rock Town Hall, ideas come and go.
