{"id":374,"date":"2007-03-13T00:17:04","date_gmt":"2007-03-13T04:17:04","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2007-03-13T10:43:25","modified_gmt":"2007-03-13T10:43:25","slug":"can-you-still-love-a-band-out-of-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/can-you-still-love-a-band-out-of-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Can You Still Love A Band Out Of Time?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SsJIPa7PvPw?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><br \/>\n<em>Is there a rock-shrink in the house?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Retro, revivalist, purist, 2nd wave&#8230; I&#8217;ve got a hang-up regarding bands that cross the line between &#8220;heavily influenced&#8221; and <strong>Rupert Pupkin<\/strong>.  The problem is, I don&#8217;t feel that my hang-up is justified.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered once in a comment awhile back about psychedelic music and if it is a &#8220;genre&#8221; or an &#8220;era&#8221; or what?  The gist being, can there be a psychedelic band who&#8217;s members&#8217; first taste of psilocybin was residual from nursing their mother&#8217;s unwashed teat at a <strong>Mungo Jerry<\/strong> concert? (If even they&#8217;ve ever tasted it at all!)<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nSame, and maybe even more so, for punk.  Is <strong>Green Day<\/strong> a punk band?  Don&#8217;t pick the corn from my stool and tell me they were Power-Pop or some shit.  The point is, they are mostly referred to as a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_day\" title=\"Punk\" target=\"_blank\">punk band<\/a>.  But can there be a punk band post-1980?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve come to appreciate Green Day lately as my 12-year-old son digs them, and there are plenty worse bands that he could be listening to.  Perhaps not me (as I&#8217;m not as detail oriented as you guys) but certainly some of you could listen and watch every Green Day video and pinpoint every lick, Look, and eyeliner color copped from someone a decade earlier. <\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q5bhTt69H-0?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>But here&#8217;s the rub.  As much as I think Green Day is OK, I feel like there&#8217;s a possibility that they could have been one of my favorite bands <em>IF<\/em> they had released their first album sometime around &#8217;76-&#8217;79.  Except for this hang-up of mine.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to stem a discussion on the merits of Green Day, I&#8217;ll offer two more examples.  <strong>Little Steven&#8217;s Underground<\/strong> garage has bombarded me with &#8217;60s-style garage bands that honestly I don&#8217;t know if they&#8217;re old or not.  But my hang-up <em>requires<\/em> me to know before I can make a judgment. Is that fair. I really like <strong>The Greenhornes<\/strong>.  <em>But<\/em>&#8230;<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E5u_f3vDYQk?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>Or how about <strong>The Wondermints<\/strong>?  These guys wanted to be Brian Wilson&#8217;s band so bad that they <em>became<\/em> Brian Wilson&#8217;s band!  I&#8217;ve been listening to <em>Mind If We Make Love to You<\/em> lately and man I really dig a lot of it, until I remember&#8230; They&#8217;re not really Brian Wilson&#8217;s band.<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SbkxfuHlcq8?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>Its a sense that these bands aren&#8217;t real or don&#8217;t have a voice of their own, even if they do have their own (retro) voice.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t hold blues musicians to this code.  (Although I do wince at <strong>Harry Connick Jr.<\/strong> for the same, and other, reasons.)  So what&#8217;s my prob?<\/p>\n<p>If I let it go will I slide down a slippery slope of <strong>Lenny Kravitz<\/strong>, <strong>Black Crowes<\/strong>, and <strong>Brian Jonestown Massacre<\/strong>?  Will I forgive and start to rock out with <strong>Sloan<\/strong>?
