Our Mystery Date was indeed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pattofan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patto<\/a><\/strong>, featuring <strong>Mike Patto<\/strong>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/mystery-date-21\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mystery Songs were &#8220;Hold Your Fire&#8221; and &#8220;Hold Me Back.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0Now that you know who this band is, I offer you\u00a0&#8220;The Man,&#8221; another song that may be too long for some of you, but those of you lacking patience may miss out on some choice insights into the song&#8217;s subject matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patto, &#8220;The Man&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n[audio:http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Patto_01_The-Man.mp3|titles=Patto, &#8220;The Man&#8221;]\n<p>The band released 3 albums, from 1970 to 1973, before disbanding, leaving an unreleased (until 1995) album in the can. Now, get your pad and pen ready, because I&#8217;m about to blow your Rock Town Hall mind and waste a lot of your time!<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1grDvm8xjWQ?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>Singer Mike Patto, who\u00a0would later fill in as lead singer of <strong>Spooky Tooth<\/strong> in 1974, while that band was on its last legs (<em>Mad props! <\/em>misterioso and petesecrutz; I didn&#8217;t know Patto was in that band when you two kicked them around!), and much of the band Patto date back to a late-&#8217;60s psych-pop-prog band called <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timebox_(band)\" target=\"_blank\">Timebox<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WJ_QW3m_YO8?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>The little I&#8217;ve heard of Timebox\u00a0makes me think\u00a0of <strong>Procol Harum<\/strong> and other bands from that time who, I imagine, sound like Procul Harum.\u00a0The song they perform here, though, &#8220;Beggin&#8217;,&#8221; sounds like a <strong>Four Seasons<\/strong> number, which it very well may be. Timebox also included future Patto\u00a0members guitarist\/vibraphonist <strong>Ollie Halsall<\/strong> and bassist <strong>Clive Griffiths<\/strong>. But that&#8217;s not all!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gdqDuOP59RI?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>Lefty guitarist Halsall was a well-respected\u00a0musician and wildman in UK Art Rock circles, later playing with <strong>Kevin Ayers<\/strong> and <strong>John Cale<\/strong>,\u00a0and along\u00a0with Patto drummer <strong>John Halsey<\/strong> would record as part of <strong>The Rutles<\/strong>! Halsall played guitar and sang the &#8220;Paul&#8221; songs on the album but only appeared briefly in the film, <em>All You Need Is Cash<\/em>, as the Stu Sutcliffe-like Leppo, &#8220;the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/once-and-for-all-the-fifth-rutle\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fifth Rutle<\/a>.&#8221; Halsey, however, not only drummed on record, he played the &#8220;Ringo&#8221; character in the movie!<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kDfsYh5eHfo?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>In the Swingin&#8217; Sixties, Halsall and Halsey briefly played together in another band, <strong>Tempest<\/strong>, where they first honed their Beatles chops! But that&#8217;s not even close to all, nor is the fact that Halsey played drums on <strong>Lou Reed<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Transformer<\/em>! Patto members were cursed by early death by cancer (Patto himself, in 1979), heroin overdose (Halsall, in 1992), and if memory serves some near-death van accident that left Halsey, I believe, in very bad shape. (Patto fans, feel free to set the record straight!)\u00a0 Following is Halsall with Kevin Ayers and a member of one of our past Mystery Date bands!<\/p><iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rAJt5s0RIm4?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>That&#8217;s a lot, for a band that few of us could identify and that existed for a short time, but believe it or not, <em>that&#8217;s not all!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No, following the demise of Patto, the band&#8217;s namesake and Halsall would give it one more go in a new band with a &#8220;racy&#8221; album cover that I bet you never forgot if you ever saw it in its time:<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6429\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6429\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6429\" title=\"boxer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/boxer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/boxer.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/boxer-291x300.jpg 291w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The album you couldn&#39;t bring home to Mom!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1979, following his old friend Mike Patto&#8217;s death, Ollie Halsall was in bad shape and, from what I&#8217;ve read, pretty much\u00a0homeless. Using borrowed equipment and playing all the instruments himself he recorded a set of demos that would be released after his death as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.olliehalsall.co.uk\/cavespage.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Caves<\/a><\/em>. The following tracks are pretty cool in the kind of homemade, pop-smart way that plays well in these hallowed halls.
