{"id":6454,"date":"2011-03-24T08:01:50","date_gmt":"2011-03-24T12:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/?p=6454"},"modified":"2011-03-29T10:14:24","modified_gmt":"2011-03-29T14:14:24","slug":"greatest-hits-single-honesty-is-the-best-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/greatest-hits-single-honesty-is-the-best-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Greatest Hits Single: Honesty Is the Best Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<iframe class='youtube-player youtuber' type='text\/html' width='425' height='355' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/88S5qa2fsw8?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;ap=%252526fmt%253D18' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe><p>I recently caught a set by the new band of a fellow Townperson, during which they played \u201cMy Maria.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019ve always loved this song but I only had the version by the <strong>Gear Daddys<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So I went to buy the original version by <strong>BW Stevenson<\/strong> on iTunes and was interested to see that he also did the original version of &#8220;Shambala,&#8221; the only song by <strong>Three Dog Night<\/strong> that I can stomach.\u00a0Thinking that I may have stumbled onto an as-yet-untapped source of hidden pop gems, I clicked on compilation entitled <em>BW Stevenson: His Very Best<\/em>.\u00a0It consisted in its entirety of &#8220;My Maria,&#8221; &#8220;Shambala,&#8221; and a remake of &#8220;Sunny.&#8221;\u00a0 Three songs, that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>This may be one of the first instances of honest marketing that I\u2019ve come across, and it made me wonder, if the record labels were really being candid, which other artist are \u00a0most deserving of a \u201cBest Of\u201d EP or even a \u201cBest Of\u201d single?<\/p>\n<p>One-hit wonders are excluded from consideration, obviously.\u00a0But what about bands like <strong>the Mamas &amp; the Papas<\/strong> (one of my all-time least favorites)?\u00a0Surely, their \u201cBest Of\u201d could be distilled down to &#8220;California Dreaming&#8221; and one other song that I\u2019ve never heard, couldn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Please keep in mind we\u2019re talking about paring down a \u201cBest Of\u201d compilation, not an original album.\u00a0I don\u2019t want the Mod to seize this as an opportunity to reiterate his misguided notion that <em>Exile on Main Street<\/em> would somehow be better as an EP.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently caught a set by the new band of a fellow Townperson, during which they played \u201cMy Maria.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019ve always loved this song but I only had the version by the Gear Daddys.
