Plenty of lotus to go around.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/deal-with-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Radiohead&#8217;s latest single, <\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/deal-with-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lotus Flower<\/a><\/strong>, was the song that became the target of a whole lotta dissing. I&#8217;ve been thinking about the comments that were generated and still puzzling them over.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>The self-indulgence of Thom Yorke.<\/em> So a song sung in the first person about a problematic relationship should depict the whole band? I think I&#8217;ll take that over some of the &#8217;80s band videos that have the lead singer play acting the relationship with a model.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Bowler Hat.<\/em> If he wore yoga wear, wouldn&#8217;t we liken him to, say, the character of <a href=\"http:\/\/johnnyvengeance.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/3109990-300x169.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Ian<\/a>, in <em>High Fidelity<\/em>? Stipe wears modified exercise wear in REM&#8217;s &#8220;Lotus,&#8221; so does that make that a better video?<\/li>\n<li><em>The dancing.<\/em> If the song is about drug use, as posited by the sages of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/sudsonbleeker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Suds on Bleeker<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/sudsonbleeker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> blog<\/a>, then isn&#8217;t the movement pretty representational? <a href=\"http:\/\/sudsonbleeker.com\/2011\/02\/24\/dissecting-radioheads-lotus-flower\/\" target=\"_blank\">Note hypothesis of viagra abuse<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>The symbol of the lotus.<\/em> Out of the muck comes purity. Femininity (those are pretty tight pants). The progress of the soul from materialism to enlightenment. Those themes were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/music\/the-beatles\/6501395\/Beatle-Ringo-Starrs-face-seen-in-water-droplet-on-lotus-leaf.html\" target=\"_blank\">popular in the &#8217;60s, too<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"lotus2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/lotus2-300x96.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"96\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The video seems to <a href=\"http:\/\/fc06.deviantart.net\/fs70\/i\/2011\/087\/3\/2\/joel_gray_by_snowsowhite-d3cp3m8.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">flaunt<\/a> a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/rockism\/\" target=\"_blank\">lack of the rock and roll ethos<\/a>. There is a flagrant disregard for lip synching. There are no other band members depicted. There is dancing in a non-white man&#8217;s-overbite kind of way.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that&#8217;s the point.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lotus, the song\u00a0by REM.
