Mighty Awful or Mighty Underrated? You Make the Call!<\/p><\/div>\n

This year marks the 20th anniversary of EC’s Mighty Like a Rose<\/em>. I haven’t listened to it in, oh, I don’t know, 10 years or more.\u00a0Maybe Mod, with his new-found respect for Mitchell Froom<\/a>, will find it a heretofore neglected masterpiece. Maybe it will have more than the one song I remember thinking was any good.\u00a0(Couldn’t Call It Unexpected<\/a>.)\u00a0 Let us rethink Mighty Like a Rose<\/em>, and revisit Bearded Elvis<\/strong> of the summer of 1991. (I saw him twice–twice!<\/em>–on that tour, with the Replacements opening.)<\/p>\n

What was it about this record? The dodgy production?\u00a0The ugly cover?\u00a0The beard?\u00a0The overwrought arrangements?\u00a0The unwelcome presence of Marc Ribot<\/strong>?\u00a0The undercooked songwriting?\u00a0I mean, for instance, did it really take Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney<\/strong> to come up with “So Like Candy”? Let the critical reassessment\/feeding frenzy begin!<\/em><\/p>
