{"id":8147,"date":"2011-07-11T07:16:37","date_gmt":"2011-07-11T11:16:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/?p=8147"},"modified":"2011-07-11T09:59:34","modified_gmt":"2011-07-11T13:59:34","slug":"sunday-papers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/sunday-papers\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Papers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With this Sunday&#8217;s demise of the British tabloid <em>The News of the World<\/em>, it got me to thinking about <strong>Joe Jackson<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;ode&#8221; to that form of journalism, &#8220;Sunday Papers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"695\" height=\"521\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GnaUL8OpBck?feature=oembed&amp;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This tune is from Jackson&#8217;s <em>Look Sharp<\/em>, one of my favorite albums and a strong contender from 1979.  But thinking about my time here at The Hall, I can&#8217;t think of many, if any, mentions of Joe Jackson or his music.  I mean, this is a guy who initially appeared to be part of that holy trinity of English angry young singer-songwriters (alongside <strong>Elvis Costello<\/strong> and <strong>Graham Parker<\/strong>) and whose choice of footwear influenced a subset of the hip and happening.  He writes some pretty clever lyrics, plays keyboards and a mean harmonica, was an early adopter of the music video form, and has worked with <strong>Francis Ford Coppola<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m trying to ascertain RTH&#8217;s disinclination to embrace The Man.  Could it be his hairline?  That he has worn an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktownhall.com\/blogs\/index.php\/groundbreaking-research-by-rth-labs-earring-declared-a-sign-of-weakness\/\" target=\"_blank\">earring<\/a>?  That he plays the piano rather than a guitar.  That he has embraced multiple musical styles that don&#8217;t always sync with the tastes of the time?  That he cooperated on a cover of a <strong>Pulp<\/strong> song with <strong>William Shatner<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>That string of albums, including <em>Look Sharp<\/em>, <em>I&#8217;m the Man<\/em>, <em>Beat Crazy<\/em>, and <em>Night and Day<\/em>, are some of my favorites.
