Let’s review the ground rules here. The Mystery Date song is not necessarily something I believe to be good. So feel free to rip it or praise it. Rather the song is something of interest due to the artist, influences, time period… Your job is to decipher as much as you can about the artist without research. Who do you think it is? Or, Who do you think it sounds like? When do you think it was recorded? Etc…

If you know who it is, don’t spoil it for the rest. Anyone who knows it can play the “mockcarr option.” (And I’ve got a hunch that one of you knows this one.) This option is for those of you who just can’t hold your tongue and must let everyone know just how in-the-know you are by calling it. So if you know who it is and want everyone else to know that you know, email Mr. Moderator at mrmoderator [at] rocktownhall [dot] com. If correct we will post how brilliant you are in the Comments section.

The real test of strength though is to guess as close as possible without knowing. Ready, steady, go!

(Thanks to the Townsperson who gave me this album many moons ago. Now keep your trap shut!)

Familiar sounding…could be a cross between Nazareth and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Possibly Dutch, of course.

  2. Definitely sounds Dutch, but innnnnncorrect!

I have no idea what this is, but it sounds like some kind of fake rock music written for a movie or something by someone who isn’t really a rock musician. Someone with an organ.

  4. Really I don’t know, but it has something of an early 70’s heavy prog vibe, sort of early King Crimson without the chops. The Arthur Brown reference made sense too. I’m guessing based on this little information that I have that it’s Atomic Rooster. If it isn’t, it should be.

I’m still not sure who it is, but I’ve discovered some gems along the way. I can now add Corpus, Buffalo,Iron Claw and Mainhorse to the heavy heap.

  6. It sounds to me like Christopher Guest could have been listening to this when he was writing for Spinal Tap. I just can’t tell if it would have been on “Bitch School” or “Shark Sandwich.”

I know it’s not Sugarloaf but I just to write it anyway. So I’ll satisfy my urge and be wrong. Sugarloaf. Or the father or somebody in “Shudder To Think.”

    My wife says:
“It sounds like something pretend that you’d see some kid listening to in some dumb movie.”

Just re-read Big Steve’s comment. So funny that it so closely matches my wife’s thought.

  9. Awesome characterization. I have no idea of the musicians’ collective rock cred, but this is plausible.

  10. I also heard the King Crimson vibe, but it’s not anyone associated with them or Atomic Rooster.

  11. Definitely, but Guest is not involved in the making of this music.

  12. I so thought I had it. After posting, I popped up a couple of Atomic Rooster song samples from Amazon and became even more convinced that I was right.

Ugh. Boy is that awful. I have no idea who it is.

  14. Early Kansas?

  15. ladymisskirroyale

    Exactly my thought!

  16. ladymisskirroyale

Or an outtake from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Mr. Royale begged me to turn it off. But not before he guessed Ronnie James Dio solo stuff.

  18. More to come shortly…in the reveal!

  19. Wrong state, wrong country, for that matter.
