In some parts of the United States school is already be back in session; those of us in my neck of the woods have until after Labor Day before the kids go back to school. I have no idea when our Townspeople from other countries return to school, but I bet it’s sometime soon. I know it’s not as thrilling as school being out for summer, but what are your favorite school in session-related songs?

  1. Gotta go with “School Day” by The Mighty Chuck. There’s something about the way he sings “Hail, Hail Rock n Roll!”

In the latest issue of Rolling Stone (the one with naked, bloody people on the cover), there’s an interview with The Mighty Chuck. I would encourage you all to take a peek.

One of the things I discovered about the interview (and had not realized) is that The Mighty Chuck has avoided the merchandising game. Unlike, say, The Who (They have notebooks at Wal-Mart!) or AC/DC, Chuck’s image isn’t plastered all over shirts and products. But I digress…I need to go get my Who notebook for back to school.

I keep hearing The Kinks’ “David Watts,” which is not really about school but a classmate in the context of school, and Sam Cooke’s “What a Wonderful World,” with all those subjects he doesn’t know much about.

    Hot for Teacher. Duh.

  4. misterioso

Elton John, “Teacher I Need You.” Not quite Hot for Teacher, but…

  5. Teacher Teacher by Rockpile

Exactly the kind of advice that got Chuck in trouble.

  7. September by David Sylvian.

Thirteen by Big Star, since Alex’s trying to walk her home from school.

  9. The dB’s “Bad Reputation” comes to mind. Gawking at girls was one of my favorite things about school, when I was a (not very good) student.

I work for a school district, and returned this week to 100 degree temperatures and a whole lot of work. So my song would be “The Heat is On.”

Teacher, Teacher was my first thought, though. Thanks, cdm.

Back to school and walking home from school, “We Are Going to Be Friends” by the White Stripes.

Rock and Roll High School by the Ramones is catchy.

I also thought of Teacher by Jethro Tull, but I don’t think that’s about “school”.

    @mockcarr: heh, heh, heh…

  14. Alexmagic – bravo!

My Old School is one Steely Dan’s better efforts.

Be True To Your School – the Beach Boys.

Mr. Royale suggests playing School’s Out backwards…

“Hello, Schoolteacher” — a great thrifty number by obscure novelty doo-woppers the 4 After 5s.

    I should post that one.

Of course, there’s always “Hot for Teacher” by Van Fuckin’ Halen.

  18. BigSteve

No one has mentioned everyone’s favorite Kinks album, Schoolboys in Disgrace.

  19. BigSteve

Weird trivia … the cover of Schoolboys in Disgrace, the cartoon of the kid with his trousers down for a caning, was done by T. Rex’s Mickey Finn, whose name cropped up today in the bad drummers thread.

  20. “Back to Schooldays” by Graham Parker and The Rumour .

“Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl” by Sonny Boy Williamson I – though many of the numerous covers would do, esp. The Yardbirds.
