I spent the weekend with my 1 year old son listening to The John Lennon 11-disc box set.
Does anyone else have this? What are your thoughts on the “true mixes” vs 2000 ear remixes. I have to say I am not that impressed by the new set as far as sound (I have an mp3 version so I don’t have the actuall box, notes etc)
Johns 1970’s output is messy, the recordings do not do the songs justice in many cases. The mixes are even worse.
Proves that Imagine and Plastic Ono Band are FAR superior to anything after them (with a few exceptions like #9 Dream)
Also suffered though my Atlanta Braves falling apart
Watching baseball, driving out to the country for a bonfire. I suppose I could have failed at making art and leaped to my demise from a high window but I just didn’t get around to it. Uplifting stuff for a Monday morning.

I plan on picking up some of the Lennon reissues – don’t know if I’ll go for the box because I don’t want that Rock ‘n Roll album in my house. Sounds like a nice time you had with your son.
I screamed myself hoarse at the Phillies game on Friday night, yelled myself a bit hoarser coaching my son’s soccer team through a tournament this weekend, and then worked my ass off on building a database for a new client last night while listening to/watching the Phils wrap up a sweep of the Reds. Had the Phils lost a friend and I would have been driving through western Pennsylvania about now, en route to Cincinnati. I’m kind of relieved that I get to brag about the fact that we were going to do this rather than actually doing it at my age and with all that’s going on!
Spent the Weekend watching baseball (go Phils!), entertaining family as we prepared for my grandson’s baptism, stole out late Saturday night to catch an amazing set by The Hold Steady in a tiny Delaware shithole, coached two soccer games, played some hoops, went to a football game and pretended to listen to my father-in-law. Not to mention the Phils-Eagles exacta last night! Great weekend.
What age group do you coach, teek? I coach a boys U14 team. With the boys headed to high school next year and getting a real coach, I’m feeling a bit wistful, like Bobby Cox – but without the 14 division titles.
U15, which is 8th and 9th graders. My team is all 8th graders so we’re taking a beating from some of the 9th grade teams. I will be crushed when coaching ends, but we go up to U18, so I’ve still got a few years. Half my kids play for the rec league and the school team. I am sure the school coach corrects all my mistakes.
Very cool, teek. Our club typically doesn’t field a U15 team, but if there’s an opportunity to continue coaching beyond this year I’ll pull a Brett Favre and quickly retract my retirement paperwork.
Looking back, turns out my weekend was 90% racing-related. Saturday was taking my new race tires back and forth to the tire shop (today I test whether this new choice of tire will fit on the car without rubbing…) and later watching the F1 race in Japan. Sunday was hanging out and helping at a buddy’s race at Infineon Raceway. Where did the time go? Oh, kept an eye on the RTH changeover along the way 🙂
RTH picked up my avatar somehow but I can’t figure out where it gets assigned or changed (unless it’s the “Your Photo” setting, which shows nothing currently). Must have come from the old site, but the old site didn’t display them. I also have a comment I’m sending to the Back Office rather than display here.
Al (and others), you will notice a “Subscribe by Email” box near the top of the left column. This enables you to subscribe and receive e-mails from RTH when “new content” is posted. I’m testing this out myself – I don’t know if it means only the new post or each new comment. I don’t recall how you used e-mails from the old platform. Were you receiving e-mails with each comment or just kicking off each new thread? Thanks.
The Back Office explained that there’s some battle between avatars and gravatars (sp?) – that one overrides the other, if a user has a preexisting WordPress account, or something weird like that. The whole notion of avatars battling with gravatars makes us feel 800 years old. We put our heads together and came up with the following policy for the time being:
Rock Town Hall is not responsible for turf issues between avatars and gravatars.
If anyone else faces such confusion and finds a way around it, let us know. Thanks!
How do I change my avatar? I don’t think I physically or emotionally resemble a colonial dude. Although I do like his headwear. I see a Halloween possibility…
As for my weekend, I was at a loss without RTH! Other than that, I filled my wasted hours with more of the Arts: a performance of “Scapin,” starring Bill Irwin, at A.C.T, and then rehearsals for Nutcracker.
We’re working thru this al. We “think” that the email subscription will get you email when a new post is published. For comments we have the “Notify me of followup comments…” link at the bottom of each comment section so you can pick and choose which comments you want to be informed of. We have not tested either of these yet so let us know. Damn this is a tiny box to type within.
K and I drove my Croatian bass out to Frank Valentich in Pittsburgh for repairs. Stopped in Bedford on the way home at the fall foliage do, and happened upon the Bedford Banjo Shop, where I picked up a beautiful Ukulele. Look for video to come soon! A very nice trip and highly unwasted weekend…

Saturday night saw contemporary dancer Michael Clark’s
memoir-esque Come, Been, Gone. A monumental homage to David Bowie, Lou Reed and the edgy end of the 80s. Involved seven tightly clad dancers writhing about to Heroes, the original clip, played on a massive video projection.
Not my usual Saturday night.
Hoodoo Gurus on Friday night. It was an early show and I think they cut it short because the venue had another show for later that night. Also, I didn’t know most of the songs and I have half their albums, so I’m guessing that a lot were from the new album. Still, they were really good. And I made it home by the 7th inning of the Phillies game.
Then up to CT for a mellow weekend at the in-laws.
Do you mean you can no longer preview your comments? (You can still preview new threads that you draft.) I didn’t notice that, but I can see how that would be something folks would like to do. We’ll look into that. Thanks.
