RTH World Cup of Rock ‘n Roll Field of 16 Selected

Thanks to you, the field of 16 for Rock Town Hall’s World Cup of Rock ‘n Roll has been set! Because this is our inaugural World Cup of Rock ‘n Roll, for this year only we will allow each competing nation to submit up to three artists, past or present. The rationale for keeping this year’s competition open to all-time contributors is to set the baseline for all future World Cup tournaments and enable up-and-coming rock rock nations the chance to overthrow more-established favorites in coming matches.

What’s the best “seat” you’ve ever had for a show?

Mine was probably when Townsman andyr and I stood a row or two back from the 4-inch “stage” that barely held X, when I saw them play in a dance studio (you know, with mirrors and those stretching bars on the walls) in support of Under the Big Black Sun. The band was so energetic, animated, and sexy – and they were right in our faces. It was like in the movies, yet people in Philly didn’t do a lot of stupid slam-dancing back then, so I could stand there in my typical arms-folded stance and bob my head in appreciation. It was my first up-close look at what a band’s onstage dynamic could be, and I’ve never had a better look at a better dynamic since.

Rock Town Hall’s World Cup of Rock ‘n Roll

Fela, captain of the Nigerian team, wants in!

To celebrate the kick-off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, can we select a bracket of the 16 most-rocking nations, including artists to represent each nation? Although this is the World Cup of Rock ‘n Roll, let’s be open-minded and allow “world” musicians into the mix. The roster of each nation can be represented by as many as THREE artists, to avoid having to choose between the Beatles and the Stones, for instance, after first selecting Led Zeppelin and Lily Allen to represent the mighty entry from England.

Feel free to begin by suggesting nations, with or without the two representative artists. You may suggest as many as 16 finalists or as few as 1 at a time.

Once the brackets are set – and only then – will the matches play out!

It’s one thing for young Courteney Cox to fawn over The Boss before getting pulled onstage for some ’80s-style shimmying, but how’d you like to have this Suzanne woman in your face at every one of your shows? However, considering it’s Lou demonstrating his then-latest example of his music as it was meant to sound, I guess that’s the price you pay.
