I bit the bullet and got tickets for the New Orleans Jazz Fest this Sunday. Going to see old Neil Young. I've never seen him and they're giving him a two hour slot, so I'm pumped. Jazz Fest is a great vibe and probably the best large festival show you could ever hope to attend. The crowds (which are usually the problems at these events) are laid back and the food is great. I'll report later...
It's going to be a whirlwind. My band is playing in Memphis tomorrow afternoon. Memphis in May is also happening this weekend starring our friend Elvis Costello. Conventional wisdom would tell you that I'm already in town, just go see E.C., but I'm spoiled. The three times that I saw him, they were all in club settings with over two hour sets. I was five feet away from the man. I just know standing in a drunken crowd of thousands hearing hits for an hour would not be nearly as much fun. So, I'll make the long trek and hear Neil on Sunday afternoon...

I confess: I am on Twitter. I actually think it is a cool site, as long as you don't take it too seriously, and I find the 140-character limit a good writing exercise. Anyway, Roger McGuinn is also there and it's pretty great how much he "gets" the site and how to use it.

As the cliche goes around here, "Thanks for sharing", Mr. Mod! I always enjoy watching Shindig & Hullbaloo. There's something about them that you don't see nowadays. It's nice to see the Byrds give the old community college try on "Not Fade Away" & that "Jump Back" (originally done by Rufus Thomas by the way)by Willie Nelson (THAT Willie Nelson?) is one surreal vision to be sure.
Speaking of which, I was watching a Lovin' Spoonful DVD a couple of nights ago & it was enjoyable to see Zally mug through the various clips even though Sebastian was doing the singing. I think Zally was to the Lovin' Spoonful what David Lee Roth was to Van Halen, the "spark" that could never be replaced.

I can't even imagine what the rehearsals for this show must have been like. Juggling all those different singing groups with multiple backing bands plus dancers? It's clips like this that make me think that pep pills must have been as common as vitamins in the 60s.
