Music trivia I discovered today — Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys) and Sting (the Police, Sting) went to the same grammar (high) school in Newcastle, St. Cuthbert’s. Sting is (only?) three years older than Tennant, so they didn’t know each other.

Similar trivia I’ve known for a while — Hugh Cornwell (the Stranglers) and Richard Thompson (Fairport Convention, Richard & Linda Thompson, Richard Thompson) not only went to the same school, they were in a band together called Emil & the Detectives.

  2. I had come across that Cornwell/Thompson connection before but I love this picture. An angelic look on the later to be bad boy, Cornwell, and the hoodlum sneer on Thompson, the NPR musical icon, play nicely against type.

  3. Jon Harrison, the man behind the late, beloved Little Hits blog, is back with something new.

I hate to be the spoiler here, but this is the fine print at the Stately Harold site:

“The Stately Harold is a satirical website. None of the stories have a grain of truth to them and the opinions do not belong to real people.”

Ugh! I thought might be a possibility. That would be nothing more than a curiosity anyway.

  6. Our very own Andyr is quoted in this piece. He deftly avoids talking about some of the real issues behind his embracing digital streaming technology, such as his complete disregard for album sleeves!

Perhaps I’m getting old but I plan on keeping my quite large digital music collection, especially since it contains a lot of prog and classic rock obscurities and it has been carefully collected over the course of several years. It’s almost all organized by artist, then album by year of release, and I still mostly listen to a complete album at a time, though I might remove from the playlist a song I might particularly dislike. There is a separate folder for a few hundred collected singles. I also have a few full backups on portable HDs so (knock on wood) I don’t have to worry about losing any music – no cloud storage for me. I barely touch services like Spotify.

  8. That’s incredible! If only we could have all been Cc’d on that letter.

  9. Here’s an interesting poll. Now, I didn’t really read the article so I don’t know who voted or how. I just scanned the listing. I think Tina Weymouth was a great bass player but it’s surprising to see her even mentioned in an article like this – not because of talent or merit but just, well, because – never mind coming in ahead of people like Macca or James Jamerson.
