Our night was a great. We got together with our friends from the Head as well as Townsmen Ken and E. Pluribus Gergely and their families. We took some time to listen to The Beach Boys’ 20/20, part of the twofer I own (with Wild Honey): man that album goes downhill fast. A Game Theory album was discovered in my collection, for which I’m due to get much shit. We threw that on for a song. Then we actually rang in the New Year with Dark Side of the Moon, which my youngest son wanted to play Chickenfrank in the hope of selling him our spare copy. Chick wasn’t buying. Hope you all had a Happy New Year – or will have one in the next 30 minutes, if you’re as far west as Gerry, Sammy, and The Back Office!

OMG, we’re all dead and the last thing we got to hear was Pink Floyd! A final tragedy. Happy New Year!

    weird…

two days ago someone else posted this on another completely un-related listserv i’m on.

so far my ’09 has involved coffee, getting a good drum sound for a home recording, and blissfully ignoring the cell as it continues to blow up: no, i don’t want to leave my port richmond hovel to watch the mummers, thankyouverymuch.

Nice work on the new collection of images in the banner by The Back Office! I’m looking forward to some new “BINGO!” moments like Rondstadt’s cantonese chicken bone and Lennon’s squeezing out that double-bend face on Let it Be.

2000 Man’s in the banner! BINGO!

  6. The Back Office

With the exception of one (that is still representational) all new banner images were culled from 2008 RTH posts.

  7. I’m listening to the Sons of Champlin, for probably the first time ever.

I actually kinda like this song.

  8. Hey Hrundi,

I just learned that Richard E. Grant is from Swaziland. Did you know that? Did you know him?

I’m not *that* old, Oats! But, yeah, Richard Grant is Swaziland’s one famous son. I never knew him personally, but he went to my school, I guess seven or eight years before I did — and we got drunk at the same pubs (most notably the Theatre Club), though seven or eight years separated us there, too.

He made a semi-autobiographical movie about growing up in SD a few years ago, but I’ve never seen it. I hope it shows the country to be as beautiful as it is. Granted, it’s turned into a typical, thoroughly mismanaged African shit-hole in many ways — but it’s one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

I spent the first weekend of ’09 indulging in the soon to be extinct practice of going through the bargain bin of a mall record store, in this case a FYE that had a 75% off sale. Here’s what I found for the grand price of $2 each:

    1. A Bee Gees CD from the Czech Republic which was a compilation of their pre-fame Australian stuff w/a current picture of them on the cover. I was curious about how they sounded like & despite some awful tracks, it sounded OK (crappy sound, however).
    2. RINGO by Ringo Starr. Hey, it had most of his half decent songs (including “It Don’t Come Easy”, which was a bonus track)& I figured that I didn’t have any solo Ringo in my collection & this fit the bill.
    3. We Love Life by Pulp, their last album & it was produced by Scott Walker. I got the Hits compilation for Christmas & this album sounded pretty good to me on the first listen.

Finally, Mr. Mod,what’s with Pat Burrell going to the Rays? I expect some awkward moments in the Rays clubhouse when he comes in w/that World Series ring.
