I’m finding, since the front page content doesn’t change that often, that the best way to keep in touch with the day’s comments is to hit the Last comments link on the sidebar. This may be the best way for people from the old list to get into the flow and keep content and discussion fresh.

I say:
Townsman, we thank you for this helpful tip.

Judging by both today’s poll and the All-Star Jam area, The People are in the process of speaking. We hear a call for a Critical Upgrade on The Clash’s Give ’em Enough Rope, and we’re bringing this issue front and center.

Here’s the deal, though, don’t expect your generous Moderator to do your bidding on this album. Discounting any album that includes “Ghetto Defendant” and “Red Angel Dragnet”, Give ’em Enough Rope is my least favorite Clash album. For almost every pile-driving song I love (eg, “Safe European Home”, “Tommy Gun”, “Stay Free”, “All the Young Punks”) not to mention the silly songs I can’t help but like (eg, “Guns on the Roof” and “Julie’s Been Working for the Drug Squad”) there is an absolute stinker so bad that it would have been rejected for inclusion on a Stiff Little Fingers album!

Now, should you choose, do the work!

Townsman db says:
It’d kind of like hearing that Wynona Ryder is going to be in Playboy, it’s about 20 years too late. Can David Lee Roth sing anything like he did on those records at this point. Shouldn’t we be mourning the loss of primate Michael Anthony. Isn’t this glass half full?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A deal is almost done for David Lee Roth to return to the Van Halen fold for a summer tour of amphitheaters, sources told Billboard.com.

They said a contract could be signed as early as Wednesday for tour promoter Live Nation to produce a 40-date trek, which would mark Roth’s first outing with the rock band in more than 20 years.

Spokeswomen for Roth and the band said they were unable to provide any confirmation.

Guitarist Eddie Van Halen’s 15-year-old son, Wolfgang, has stepped in for original bassist Michael Anthony in the new incarnation of the group, which also features Eddie’s brother Alex on drums.

Van Halen last toured in 2004 with vocalist Sammy Hagar, Roth’s replacement, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore. Hagar refused to collaborate further with the Van Halen brothers after the tour’s completion, although he has consistently played live with Anthony in recent years.

The warring factions may wind up meeting in public in March when Van Halen is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Sadly, Townsman The Great 48 found himself listening to Social Distortion’s “1945” because of this:

PLACENTIA, California (AP) — Brent Liles, a former bassist for the 1980s punk rock group Social Distortion, was struck and killed by a truck while riding a bicycle, authorities said Wednesday. He was 43.

Liles was hit on January 18. No immediate charges were brought against the driver.

Liles, who was from Fullerton, joined Social Distortion in 1981 and played bass on the band’s “Mommy’s Little Monster” recording two years later.

Fed up with turmoil inside the group, he and drummer Derek O’Brien quit the band during a New Year’s Eve performance in 1983.

Liles went on to play with other punk groups such as Agent Orange.

More from The Great 48.
