Let’s face it: I’m sure more than a few of us still need to chase down some meaningful Christmas presents. What music-themed gift would you recommend for a certain type of music lover? It can be a record, a book, an instrument, an app…

  1. I’ve gotta say, I finally broke down and bought that Alabama Shakes album. I listened to it for the first time all the way through this morning, and I feel like the kind of white dude I spend inordinate amounts of time cutting up on, but it’s solid. Every song has a strong, deliberate guitar riff. They don’t do a bunch of slow stuff. They hunker down and play Forearm Rock at some point in just about every song. The woman singer kicks it out, sometimes like Janis Joplin, which although not exactly great is at least funny. If you’ve got old fart friends who like the idea of a rock band playing old-time Stax-type music with few, if any, ballads, consider Alabama Shakes.

  2. I am guessing that the Led Zep Celebration Day DVD is going to be the hot item for discerning music nerds (except 2000 Man) everywhere.

  3. For the person who likes, Christmas music, but is sick of 99.9% of it . . . I recommned:

Tracey Thorne’s new “Tinsel And Lights” album.

Another one released a few years ago that is good all the way through is Mindy Smith’s “My Holiday.”

  4. The Philadelphia Ukulele Orchestra’s debut album just came out and it has an excellent version of Mele Kalikimaka. I would recommend it for people who like “grandpa music”, “great grandpa music” and the ukulele mixed with things like the theremin and the steel.

Not to brag but I happen to be close personal friends with several members of the group…

    It’s available here:http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/philadelphiaukuleleorche

  5. I haven’t read either but the new books by Pete Townsend and Peter Criss look pretty entertaining, albeit for different reasons.

I highly recommend the Garageband app. It has brought me hours and hours of entertainment.

Has anyone tried the Eno apps, btw?

I second the Tracey Thorn suggestion.

  7. Here are some great obscure classic soul Christmas tunes to shop by: http://christmas.soundopinions.org

  8. Thanks for the link! Not the same ol’ stuff!

Can’t wait to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.

My favorite non-Christmas Christmas album is Low’s little Christmas EP.
