Let’s review the ground rules here. The Mystery Date song is not necessarily something I believe to be good. So feel free to rip it or praise it. Rather the song is something of interest due to the artist, influences, time period… Your job is to decipher as much as you can about the artist without research. Who do you think it is? Or, Who do you think it sounds like? When do you think it was recorded? Etc…

If you know who it is, don’t spoil it for the rest. Anyone who knows it can play the “mockcarr option.” (And I’ve got a hunch at least one of you know this one.) This option is for those of you who just can’t hold your tongue and must let everyone know just how in-the-know you are by calling it. So if you know who it is and want everyone else to know that you know, email Mr. Moderator at mrmoderator [at] rocktownhall [dot] com. If correct we will post how brilliant you are in the Comments section.

The real test of strength though is to guess as close as possible without knowing. Ready, steady, go!

Interesting—a friend of mine just recently sent me an MP3 of this song thinking I’d like it, which I do. All I’ll say, since I know what it is, is that there was a recent mystery date in a similar realm and I liked it so much that I went out and bought the album.

Mr. Royale is guessing The Virgin Prunes/David Axelrod.

I’m thinking the vocals sound sort of David Crosby-esque.

Hey wtf! I pressed play, and some proggy stuff came out!

I don’t know what it is, but I’m thinking British about 69, sounds a bit Yardbirds-y.

Dunno, drums sound too contemporary. I’m going to guess this is from the last five years. Not quite my thing, but I’m kind of digging this. Going to say that it’s relatively recent British prog. I hear bits of Tull and Gentle Giant, maybe some other stuff… Wait, I got it, it’s Sherman Hemsley, right?

Definitely druids dancing around in a circle music.

I wouldn’t call this prog – it’s more like the type of stuff Ten Years After or other English boogie-blooz bands would try when they wanted to sound ambitious or arty. However, it doesn’t date to the boogie period – the drums sound programmed and are wrong for both the song and the style. I’d guess mid-’90s in origin.

  8. It’s not Hemsley, but good guess!

  9. It’s not from the mid-’90s, but good musical points of reference.

  10. Something about the guitars sounds 90’s, though. I 1st thought a Radiohead copy band with some serious early Mott the Hoople (the early, sludgier stuff) influence.

  11. Is it Bubble Puppy?

  12. Nope. Time provided, I’ll do the reveal on a long-delayed Saturday Night Shut-In, maybe late tonight.

  13. The children are definitely dancing to the pipes of Pan here….

I’m afraid I don’t even have a guess, but the vocals are oh-so-Justin Hayward-ish! See what you think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEWbmt0LrgQ&feature=related Great clip, anyway.

I like this. It sounds pretty new on my crappy computer speakers. I want to see these guys open up for Black Mountain. That would be a night of massive heaviness, I bet. the guitar solos are really cool.

  16. The BIG REVEAL is coming soon! I was going to roll it out on a SNSI, but I’m going to have to miss the first week since we started the podcast, breaking a string of 79 or 80 consecutive weeks.
