Our recent wake for Andrea True and her disco classic, “More, More, More,” exposed one of the finer things about the song: its use of the cowbell. This lowly instrument has been the butt of Saturday Night Live skits but over time has made a resounding impact on the rock world. I ask you, can we list all songs that feature a cowbell? And can we determine, once and for all, what was the first song to highlight its use?

I’ll start us off with Ian Drury‘s “Reasons To Be Cheerful”

Well, the dust has barely settled on the most recent Last Man Standing but I’ve been inspired start another by a response that tonyola made to the Mod in a previous discussion.

Please name a song that contains the name of a nation in the title. The nation must be a real one, so Atlantis doesn’t count, although it can be one that no longer exists, as in my first answer: “Back in the USSR.”

Once a country is mentioned, it is off the board.

Only one answer per post please.

"not eligible"

Ahhh Friday… As we run down the clock to Happy Hour, I would like to hear suggestions for songs which mention specific brands of beer, wine, and liquor.

  1. A few rules:
Once the song is used, it is off the table. So, for George Thorogood’s “I Drink Alone” you can pick Budweiser or Jim Beam but not both.
  2. I’m looking for brands, not types of cocktails, so answers like the Harvey Wallbanger and the Pousse Café do not count.

As always, one entry per post.

And let me suggest that this would be a golden opportunity for lurker to emerge from the shadows and claim the championship belt, if only fleetingly.

I begin with the only Humble Pie song that I really like: “30 Days in the Hole” – New Castle Brown.

In a recent comment on a completely unrelated thread 2000 Man wrote the following phrase:

…we had another band, Fayreweather…

Not ever having the slightest interest in the worlds of fantasy (ie, FAHNtasy) and Renaissance Faire culture, the naming of a band by some Celtic or pseudo-Celtic “faerytayle” tradition—or whatever is going on in these band names—with extraneous e‘s and y‘s is unimaginable to me. Please help me maintain my present jaw-dropping sense of wonder at the name Fayreweather with a Last Man Standing to document as many bands with these types of names as we know to exist. Once all these band names with their incredibly non-rocking spellings have been compiled perhaps future generations of young bands in need of a band name will stumble across this post and think otherwise about adding their name to our list.

Our lead-off song contains a number of specific references to classes in school. It’s OK to cite songs that repeat any of the examples contained within. I wonder how many other rock ‘n roll songs refer to specific classes commonly found in school.

Remember: songs that mention specific classes in school (eg, algebra, history, and french class), not any old song about school or songs referring to teachers of unspecified classes. Thanks!
