Consider this…

What’s to consider? The hopes of a generation of American men have aged with them. Then, it was that they, too, could inspire Ann-Margaret to yelp that strange little Tourette-like “HA!” before they had so much as removed an article of clothing. Now, it’s to sit around with other men, singing, Weird Al-style, about their plans to go home and induce a durable woody by popping just about the only pharmaceutical the King *wasn’t* on when he died. Life is indeed beautiful in the 21st century, though I don’t give the toad/road rhyming bassist long odds on surviving on the crapper either.

The other night I was watching the Cleveland/Boston game, and it occurred to me that a huge percentage of the commercials were for Viagra/Levitra/Cialis. This is probably true for football broadcasts too, and someone should do the research. I’m fascinated by the deployment of black actors in these commercials, where they’re over-represented, for their mojo overtones.

As for this commercial, I blame Doc Pomus’ estate for letting them rewrite such a great song. I didn’t realize how great it was till I heard Shawn Colvin’s trip-hop version on the excellent Pomus tribute album, Till the Night Is Gone. It sounds like an awful idea, but it really works. Lots of other great stuff on that album, including Lou Reed doing This Magic Moment as it was meant to be heard.

I just feel sorry for the old dudes in this commercial still being on the road in their twilight years.

  4. double wow.

I feel sorry for them for needing boner juice.

Has anyone ever noticed that the logo for one of these drugs is basically a candle flame with a vagina in it?

The advertising for these things is always very Freudian. Remember the Levitra commercial where dad is casually tossing a football in the back yard, and at the end of the spot he throws the ball through hole of the tire-swing?

I also think it’s funny that Viva Las Vegas conjures up images of wild sex with loose women, but the lyrics here in the commercial are about the guy who can’t wait to get home to his significant other. Which is of course the scenario where you’re most likely to need a boost. They might as well print on the screen or on the package, “Use this product only within the confines of a committed relationship.”

Do any of you musicians have rehearsals/jam sessions in empty bars during the daytime like this?

the viagra commercial would make a great saturday night live skit just the way it is.

the viagra phenomenon in general makes me sick: it manifests a ton of social pressure on men to take a pill so that they can get it up for a woman to whom they’re no longer physically attracted.

I don’t know if there’s anything that could be added to general slocum’s take.

If the guys in the commercial clip have anything going in their favor, I guess “Viva Viagra” is a slightly less emasculating song for your band to be rehearsing before you head home to your significant other than, say, “Beth”.

yes, i meant to post similar sentiments to alex’s most recent post above: praise be to general slocum for concisely (and hilariously) summarizing the relation of these two videos!
