FoTTonight at 9:00 pm EST, Tom Scharpling, Jon Wurster, and their fully engaged band of listeners/participants will deliver the last episode of The Best Show on WFMU. I’ll leave it to others to describe the show’s free-form chatter format. I will miss it. You can listen to the live stream online, here. Hopefully The Best Show on WFMU archives will stay active. There are still episodes I need to catch up on. Thanks for many years of laughter.

Scharpling’s “Who won Under Pressure: Bowie or Mercury” topic on The Best Show directly inspired the RTH posts on USA For Africa and Band Aid, and I think firmly plants him on Mod’s side of the Winner Rock/music-as-sports divide.

  2. Yes, Scharpling always found creative ways to see music through sports and sports through music. I couldn’t get on the stream for the first half of the show last night, only coming in halfway through Philly Boy Roy’s call. Scharpling’s ending words were really nice. Good to hear Wurster talk about his role as himself. Very cool. I began catching up on the first half of the show this morning. Looking forward to the middle section and then listening to the whole thing again with my son, who said to me last night, when I asked him if he wanted to listen to the show with me: “Dad, I’m not like your generation. I can’t just sit and listen to the radio. I’ll listen to it the next time we’re on a long drive.”
